Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Pours respectably dark with a one-finger beige head. Lactic aroma with toffee and light caramel notes. Light-bodied. Excellent toffee-ish flavor with some raisin and very light roastiness. Lactic finish, very lightly sour on the back corners of the tongue. Leaves the mouth dry. Very sessionable porter.

bottle. intense deep ruby when held to light, otherwise, deep dark pour. head is avg. malt heavy, hints of chewy marshmallow and nougat, and perhaps anise. well rounded mouthfeel, fairly good backbone of darker malts. a touch of espresso bean and baking chocolate. typical Lo Grav porter. anise and plum shine through on the finish, as perhaps molasses. it gets better on the finish. it’s still a long way to go gto find the hidden jewel within the beer.

The aroma is what a porter should be. It’s roasted with malt, chocolate, and coffee. The appearance is brown with an average head. The flavor is like the aroma. The palate is a little thin. Overall this is a good beer but not great.

bottle. BOM club selection. pours a dark brown / somewhat clear black with little head. aromas of sweet malts. medium body with an oily texture. strong sense of caramel with a very nice finish. this is a solid porter that reminds me more of a brown ale. Great session beer.

Bottle from Hi-Time Wine. Pours a dark brownish color. Roasted malty aromas. Some coffee as well. Burnt bitter malty/coffee flavor up front. Some milky sweetness. Finish is somewhat bitter and burnt.

Pours to a dark cola colored body with a thin white head. The aroma is quite nice with tons of chocolate, toasted malts, specialty grains, lactose. The flavor is chocolate with tons of toasted specialty grains. Strong milky lactose. There’s perhaps some sweet milk in the palate.

dark brown & ruby colored pour w/ a nice tan head and thick lacing. Big roasty aroma some lt lactose and rich full chocolates. avg palate w/ some good coating, smaller than I like though. Good well roasted flavor lightly nutty, some chocolates. Understated and delicous. The best porter I’ve had w/ out the word imperial in front of it in some time.
