Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Good aroma, but poor head retention and relatively light in color. Some decent use of noble hops, but not nearly enough speciality malt used for my tastes. Again, this lack of malt leaves the beer feeling too one dimensional and uninspiring. With such a unique yeast strain you would have hoped that spending more money on the grain bill wouldn’t have been a problem?

Bottle at Birreria Paradiso in Georgetown. Pours dark ruby, off white head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, caramel, grass, pine, earth. Flavor is similar with anise; not too overpowering.

Bottle-Solid black color with a small, tan head. The aroma had plenty of malt, coffee and chocolate. The taste was good and chewy with chocolate, coffee and caramel, pretty much want you would want from a porter. Carbonation was higher than average.

an interesting story on were this brew came from. this is a fine porter black with hues of red when held up to the light, small tan head. smells of cocoa and coffee, roasted grain and a hint of caramel. good taste, not as strong as other porters, yet smooth and a bitter bitter, the taste of a mocha is there along with the malt. nice beer, i would recommend this one.

Bottle, poured black as night with a nice creamy head. Nose is sweet and rosey with other fruit notes, like a Belgian ale, with hints of molasses present. Taste is of coffee, cream, sugar, egg whites, milk. Thin, smooth, and a bit of a watery finish.

Poured a classic deep deep, yet clear, brown with one inch mocha head. The aroma is roasted malts, some dusty astringent malts, a hint of burnt malts, a hint of coffee, faint sweet caramelized malts and licorice. The flavor starts roasty with edges of burnt malts. As the carbonation crescendos coffee, licorice, sweet caramelized malts, vanilla and faint cream soda notes become turbulent across the palate. The finish has lingering roasty, burnt and coffee notes.

Very nice porter. Aroma is slightly vinous with hints of cocoa. The flavor is malty and not terribly heavy, quite pleasant. Could use a slightly thicker mouthfeel, but it is still a very good beer.

Nearly opaque, dark brown with red highlights. Small head with a little ring that lasts and leaves some lace. Smells of wood smoke, graham crackers and cocoa; some faint sweetish gunmetal. Taste of smoky marshmallow creme mixed into a mocha cappuccino, with some some faint soured cream and tart fruit. Palate is mostly smooth, light-medium bodied and just chalky-dryish enough towards the end to hold up the outstanding malt flavors. Nice balancing act of a lot of flavors in this beer.
