Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Pours black/red with medium tan head. Aroma is woody and soy sauce? Flavor is smoked malt and dark chocolate. Good.

lovely beer, mates, just lovely. Nice tan head, good lace. Has an odd cherry dark brown or a hazy brown depending on the lighting. In any event this is still a great beer! Well rounded. Mildly carbonated, satisfying. Roasty but with a hint of dark fruit. Session beer.

I’m getting more of a stout like quality than porter. the aroma is mostly flat. taste is all dark toasty-burnt malts with no standard porter flavors like chocolate and coffee. I am not impressed to much with this. Update 9/22/07- It feels a bit smokey with some tobacco like quality, better the second time

Not sure if I got a bad bottle or what, but something was off with this. The initial pour of dark brown met my nose with a ridiculously strong ethel alcohol aroma. This lasted for about 2 minutes and dissipated. It faded into a sweet, toffee, malt aroma that was very nice. Not too bad of a brew, but didn’t remind me of a porter. It tasted like a fine, albeit flat, root beer. Maybe I’ve just had a few too many, but I can’t get past the root beer flavor.

Clear dark ruby black body with a large creamy light brown head. Sweet rich chocolate aroma with some caramel and coffee. Dry chocolate and caramel flavor with a light roasted malt and bitter end.

It smells of chocolate. Perhaps a bit of roasted malt. Deep clear brown color with a reddish tinge. Nearly opaque. Frothy tan head that laces. Thin to medium body. Mild carbonation that fizzes a small bit. It does start with chocolate, but as the carbonation departs there is a toasted malt flavor typical of porters. A bit sweet in the middle, but the finish is dry, leaving a light toasted flavor in the mouth. An excellent porter.

Color: black. i think. it was kinda dark when i poured it. poured relatively rapidly which left a quarter inch head of a creamy tan head. Very coffee roasty flavor. Its got a bit of a bite, and a slightly fruity/sugary finish/aftertaste. Very thin and easy drinking. Not bad for a 182 year old yeast strain.

The color was a dark chocolate/red. The head was medium/light beige, creamy, and thin. The aroma was roast, some coffee, and sweet malt. The flavor was coffee, roasty, and tart. The palate was thin bodied. The finish was tart and a little more abrupt than I would have liked.
