Commercial Description:

Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Bottle. Luscious chocolate aroma. Deep ruby body, nearly black, with a short tanned head. Taste is delicious chocolate and slightly ashy roast. Subtle but well-blended. Medium body, dryish aftertaste. Bittersweetness in the main issue is restrained and classy, but the mild sourness adds the interest. I may have drawn a few points for the romantic backstory, but at the least, this is a nice session porter....

Pours a pretty standard porter, dark and reddish when held up to the light. Medium light tan head. The aroma had slight chocolate and coffee notes. A slight smokey character. The flavor was a little roasty, espresso, bakers chocolate. The palate was tad thin. Overall a good porter with a cool background.

Bottle. Pours with a dark brown color and a small head. Not much of an aroma, perhaps a slight roastiness and a bit of dough. Flavors start out wiht roasted malts and hazelnuts but then are immediately overpowered by the yeastiness. This is different than a regular porter, much less body to it.

Bottle. Very dark brown pour with light tan head that dissipated rather quickly. Aroma of black licorice and coffee. Taste is full of roastiness. Pretty good stuff, but I have other porters I prefer.

11.2 oz bottle via Malt of The Earth beer club. Pours near black with an average sized beige head. Not much in the nose, just some subtle roastiness. Taste is much stronger than the arona. Lots of roastiness, some chocolate, and burnt coffee in the finish/aftertaste. Carbonation is moderate to high. Body is medium. Pretty bold and tasty for a porter.
