Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

A tasty porter with a nice. The aroma was not very strong...hard to make out. The taste was a delicious, dare I say, ensemble of chocolate and smoke. In fact this beer is so smokey I was looking for nicotine in the ingredients. If only this beer was a little thicker and had more substance to it. You could’ve been a 4, man, you could’ve been a 4

11.2 oz bottle. Pours black with a large stable 2 finger tan head. The aroma is fairly light with a bit of malt and chocolate. The taste is light and malty and a bit thin. Tasty but not so amazing.

brownish ruddy caramel color, thin tan foamy head. aroma is roasted malt and turbinado sugar, a little baker’s chocolate. flavor is sweet roasted malt, then some licorice root and molasses, and some baking chocolate. flavor goes to leafy hop bitterness, yeasty and dusty finish. pretty cool to have some character from a couple centuries ago.

11.2 oz bottle, via slob. Pours a clear dark mahogany colored body under a foamy tight bubbled one inch light beige head. Heavy spotty lacing remained. Aroma is chocolaty with a light roast accent. Alot of dark chocolate and some touches of coffee and nuttiness. Flavor is fairly dry with a light hoppiness up front, and some caramel and chocolate malt. Finishes roastier with light alcohol and chalk. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a somewhat watery texture and light to moderate fizzy carbonation. It’s been a few years since I had this, and it seems very different than what I remember. It used to be alot more robust and heavier on the chocolate malt. This seems to have been thinned out and it’s so heavily filtered that its lost alot of it’s character.

I really love porters, since they are so similar in style to my beloved stouts. So this was a treat, to find a well made English porter, and it didn’t disappoint. Aroma was a little rummy, chocolate, vanilla, black cherries, and malts. Appearance was very nice, with the edges showing a bit of brown and a very dark brown/reddish body. There was basically no head whatsoever, nor any lacing. But that’s okay because they really don’t need to have it. Mouthfeel was a bit on the thin and watery side of things, full bodied with a tingly action on the tongue. Flavors were malts, chocolate but suprisingly there’s a wee bit of smoke found in there too! I LOVE smoke flavor in my beers. There’s also some roasted coffee beans, and some slight bitterness on the back end. Overall, I’d say this was a very pleasing porter, and one I will definitely stock up on.

(07.22.06) 11.2 oz brown bottle from Firkin’s, Libertyville, IL. 5.0 % ABV. Roasted malt aroma. Poured clear brown with small off-white head. No discernable carbonation. Medium bodied ale that starts dry with toasted malt flavor. Finished dry and clean. Rather thin and watery for a porter but a good decent drinkable ale. Complemented my cream of broccoli soup.

Black pour with a slight bit of light shining through it. Small head but nice lacing. I sometimes can’t distinguish a porter from a stout.....this one of these circumstances. Has all the chocolate goodness of a sweet stout. And it is an English recipe......hmm. Very good.
