Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Bottle. Smoky chocolate and coffee pour with an aroma to match. Coffee and chocolate flavor, followed by a hint of smoke. Nice mouthfeel. Great beer; I’d have more.

12 oz bottle into a Stem glass. Pours a very dark brown with a bit of amberish tint to it when held up to light, with a fairly thin foamed tan head. The aroma is milk chocolatey with a sweet malt backing and yeasty note to it. The flavor is mainly sweet hinting first on a thin sweet malt, moving into a thicker and fairly dry chocolate molasses with a small hint of hops in the tail end. Sweet throughout, medium-bodied. Near the very finish a hint of dirt is present before being swallowed. That lingers around with a coffeish taste for a bit. Over all a smooth, and well balanced porter.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown beer with a thin tan head. Aroma is beautifully chocolatey, sweet toast, milk chocolate and malted milk aroma over a soft earthy yeastiness. Flavour shows a faint hint of blackstrap molasses behind the earthiness and chocolate sweetness. Semi-dry throughout, with just enough carbonation and bitterness to cleanse the palate before the next drink. Warming brings up some other interesting dusty flavours. Nice malt development, fairly restrained esters and balanced hops. A lovely old-style porter.

Bottle. Dark, but not thick reddish brown body with a small white brown head. Aroma of chocolate, molasses, and some nice burnt malts. Flavor is slightly sweet and somewhat toasty, with more going on than I first suspected. Body is a little thin and fizzy. A good but not great porter.

At first, I sort of doubted the story about the yeast, but I guess it is true. This beer is probably a good representation of the recipe of old porter, but it is brewed with modern techniques, which should affect the flavor. I am sure it is fizzier than older porters. Also favor is not inluenced by oak, temp, or stray yeast. This beer has a wonderful chocolate and malt aroma. This beer is also beautiful. I know that beautiful is not often used to describe a porter, but, even with the almost black color, it is still somewhat translucent in a good clean glass. Held to light, you can see that is extremely dark amber. This beer has a certain amount of complexity. It is malty and slightly sweet. One issue, is that is seems to have a slight astringency. For a Porter, I believe that it is lacking a certain amount of body. It is a little more watery than I would like. Overall, it is good, but, for the money, there are more enjoyable porters.

Strong good chocolate aroma hits you right away. Dark reddish black color. Flavor is roasted chocolate moving from sweet to bitter. A bit dry and astringent in the mouth. Thin. Good overall.

I’ve tried a dozen Porters, and this one was very good, a bit pricy when compared to some thicker porters that are probably as good. Good carbination and when held to a bright light has a red color. It goes down smooth without any bad aftertaste. Will buy again.

Bottle. Poured reddish brown color with a minimal frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate complex roasted malt and tart fruit aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium roasted dark chocolate flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations were met.
