Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

This one really surprised me. Give to me as a gift. I had this slightly below room temperature. Poured smooth and dark with an off white head. First sip was well balanced and ended with a touch of vanilla that stayed all the way thru. The last sip tasted as good as the first This is a wonderful porter and worth of a try.

Clasic english-style porter. smooth, dreamy... Somewhat reminds me of some stouts i’ve had... although more bitter. a little smokey, but nothing overbearing. a great session porter, but i can think of more inexpensive options i’d likely consider before. at $9 for a 4-pack... this was a bit pricey for what it is.

One bottle from BOTW. Poured very little of a tan head. Roasted malt aroma with chocolate. Same with the flavor with alittle bit of hops added at the end. I enjoyed it.

11.2oz. bottle. Dark brown, almost black color with a small tan head. Mild roasted malt aroma with some hints of dark chocolate. The chocolate came out more in the flavor, along with some dark roasted malts and a bit of coffee. Tasty, but a little bland and thin bodied.

Plums, raisins, grapes and plenty of bittersweet, powdery chocolate greet the nose. Opaque, very dark amber-brown coloured body is topped by a generous, fine bubbled, creamy, tan head that recedes slowly to a thin cover and ring with some nice lacing. Vinous fruitiness is subsumed in the flavour with sweet chocolate, liquorice and lightly roasted malt character. Sweetness emerges after the lightly bitter finish and lingers with some floral hop tones in the aftertaste. Medium body with somewhat watery texture but lively carbonation that engages the tongue. It’s a shame that after rescuing the yeast from the bottom of the channel, they didn’t leave any in the bottles they’re selling. Tulip glass. Just below cellar temperature. Bottle (Main Street party Store, Ann Arbor, MI, Jul-05).
