Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Bottle. Not bad, roasty and slightly sweet, but then more bitter towards the end, which balances it a bit. Quite decent.

Very dark brown beer with almost no head at all, and only slight carbonation. Aroma is sweet malt and molasses, and chocolate candy. Flavor is the same, sweet malt and molasses, and chocolate candy, but not overly sweet. A little sweet coffee is in there. Just a hint of tartness and bitterness at the finish. Hops may be faintly present but quite subdued. Rather thin in body and a bit watery at times, other times feels fuller. I was hoping for awesome, but its just not there. Still a drinkable and enjoyable porter and a great story to go with it. Very interesting to be drinking a beer brewed with 180 year old yeast retrieved from a seabed wreck, using a porter recipe from 160 years ago. Its good but its nowhere near Fullers London Porter or Anchor Porter. $9.99 for a four pack at Broudys, Jacksonville FL.

Deep dark brown with some thinnish tan head that recedes to a ring. Nose is very good, a hint of what is to come. Lots of yeast, and molasses by the truckload, oh man. Maybe some raisins as well. Taste is very yeasty like the nose, with a nice sourness/acidity. Becomes semisweet with that huge load of molasses. Finishes clean, a bit too clean, the only negative on this otherwise great beer. I agree that it shares the similar winey qualities of Taddy Porter, which is good. As the beer warms up a bit, more of a oak flavor comes through in the end. I love this stuff. Pretty cool that they used salvaged yeast for this one. Thinner is body with the right amount of carbonation.

Bottle at cellar temp. Pours deep dark brown, almost black. Head diminishes quickly, no lacing. Nice aroma of chocolate and sweet malt. Nice flavor of dark roast coffee, chocolate, caramel, and malt. Finish slightly bitter. Texture is a little too watery, which keeps this one from being great. Overall still very good and worth a try

Pours dark with a light tan head, rich chocolate aroma almost overpowering. Rich taste of chocolate, coffee and caramel. I really liked this porter.

Pours a dark brown light tan head. Taste is very complex with dry roasted malt with hints of coffee, smoke, chocolate.

Dark, almost opaque reddish brown, very small tan head. Roasted malt nose. LIgher body than I expected given the color and aroma. Barely carbonated. Faintly sweet caramel and coffee malt flavors with some light citrus hops. Dry, although not very bitter finish. Seems like it needs a little more of everything, although it may be a good example of what it purports to be, a 19th century porter. How will we ever know?

Very Nutty Aromoa. Dark black pour...LIttle to no head to speak of. Very little if any malt taste, mostly hoppy and nutty. Finish is very clean, not as bitter as most porters. Very low carbination... This is a bear to have a few times over.
