Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Tasty little treat here. Lots of roasted malts and coffee with a toffy/chewy feel. Aroma is the same. Not that big of a head. Pretty ez on the way down. I would buy a 6 of it perhaps one day. For now...to many to try:)

Clear rootbeer brown with an inch of cappucino like head. Toffy, roasted malt and cocoa in aroma. Soft medium to light body, low carbonation. Slight metallic in flavor medium bitterness, some roasted malt and chocolate in flavor. A little dry in finish. Very drinkable, yet not enough flavor.

Pours a dark amber with thin head. Aroma of chocolate and malts. Palate is a bit thin, but the flavor is a good porter (except some traces of salt and yeast). Also, I gotta give some credit for going through the trouble of salvaging yeast from a shipwreck.

bottle. Pours a warm brown color. Has low hops and watery mouthfeel, but with a good foundation of lightly roasty caramelly sweetness.

Suprisingly sweet and malty aroma. No roastiness at all in the aroma. Deep brown with reddish tints. Very untraditional, traditional porter. It tastes little like what porters now taste like. Comes across as a malty dark bitter. Molasses and black licorice flavors. Interesting, but I like my new world fake porters better.

Bottle. Mmm... deep chocolatey smell, with a touch of mocha. Mysterious dark brown color, a light ring of foam. Very mellowed dark roasts, some scotch peated malts, and low astringency in the taste. Bitterness is a nondescript English hop profile that balances without getting in the way. Very pleasant indeed.

Dark brown/black. Insignificant tan head quickly disappears. Roasty malt and chocoffee nose and flavor. Mostly chocolate. Chocolate milk like creaminess while at the same time a bit dry. Cool concept with the yeast.
