sethdude (600), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jul 13, 2005 Pours a deep reddish-black, thin head and decent lacing. Aroma is nice and dark, plenty of dark fruit, dark malts, coffee, dark chocolate, and licorice. Flavor is a fairly traditional english-style porter, mildly hopped and a toasty malt profile. A mild nutty flavor. Mouthfeel is a bit thin. Ughsmash (3981), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 9, 2005 Deep brown, yet slightly transparent pour with very little caramel head. Aroma was predominantly slightly old coffee, with a little hop action behind it. Flavor followed the aroma, but other roasted malts came into play there. Pretty well-balanced with the hops. Coffee finish with a little baker’s chocolate bitterness. Could have been better, but my guess is that the restaurant had this bottle for quite a while. I’ll have to try it again. mrkimchee (1414), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 6, 2005 deep clear red brown, bubbly beige head. aroma of chocolate fudge, mild coffee and smoke, chocolate milk. flavour follows with more fudge and milk. smooth sweet malt and mild roasty and tart finish. Crockett (904), Steelback County, Ontario, Canada Jul 4, 2005 Deep dark reddy brown with a bubbly tan head. Nose of tart roasty chocolate. Berries and citrus souring. Milky chocolate and oatmeal. Soap and licorice. Perhaps a whiff of smoke. Body is thin. Finish is bittersweet. flutetokill (515), Fresno, California, USA Jun 25, 2005 Very dark brownish black color with a small, almost nonexistent beige head. Very strong roasted coffee and licorice aroma and flavors. Smooth, wet creamy feel. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 13, 2005 Bottle from Peace St. Market, Raleigh. Pours dark brown with medium, off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt, chocoff, almonds, corn flakes, and sweaty female gymnast ass and toes. Tastes caramel malty, roasty, with some molasses and almonds. Not very complex, but this one has a decent balance, and I will drink it again. UnsofistaCat (222), Garden City, Michigan, USA Jun 12, 2005 Blackish brown with a thin head that keeps a small lace going throughout. Great nose of pumpernickel bread and slight sweet undertone of prunes. This is exactly the kind of beer I love. However, most other Americans are hophead maniacs who probably find this beer a little boring. This porter was as smooth as some of the good black lagers I have had. Perfectly balanced roasted malt is evident at all times. Very smooth finish, almost perfect. Excellent beer.
Update: I have found this beer to be just a tad on the sour side, still great though Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA May 24, 2005 Very deep amber/brown with a thin tan head and some lace. Smells sweet caramel and chocolate with hardly any hops. Flavor is smooth sweet chocolate, toffee, and crystal malts with no roasted barley throughout. Mild bitterness in the end. Very smooth but somewhat one-dimensional and uninspiring.
