Commercial Description:

Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Pours deep dark brown with a light tan head that appears creamy and laces the glass as well as any porter i’ve seen. Aroma is roasted malts some coffee and some peat and some smoke. Flavor is quite smokey, some burnt malts, coffee, toffee, quite sweet chocolate yet toasted. On the palate it is quite full for a porter. It is creamy and delicious through and through. Finish is a little dry. I really did like this porter and found it quite delicious. I will likely purchase this again later in the year. A very nice brew...

bottle. Pours a weaker looking color than most porters but makes up for this in the aroma. Nice earthy feel to this beer. That is what most got out of it, was the earthyness. Good roasted flavor, yeasty for a porter, nicely but not aggressively hopped. Good beer, I’d have it again.

Thin, very drinkable porter. Dark, nice aroma, thin head, pretty good follow through, very sweet and slightly dry.

Mild in aroma and flavor. Chocolatey overtones, smoky undertones. Smokiness in the finish. Palate is watery. Head and retention beautiful. Definitely not thick/heavy and rich like some other non-orginal porters (e.g., Anchor, Edmund Fitzgerald).

This beer has a black appearance with some copper highlights. The aroma is very sweet almost like caramel. The taste smooth and mellow showing some coffee.

Pours dark reddish brown. Nose is very nice with chocolate and slightly woody. Flavor is slightly sweet with toffee, a little chocolate, a little roastiness, and a little smoke. A bit on the watery side, this could have used a little more flavor, but overall I thought this had enough pluses to make it a good brew.

Interesting, in that my description of the beer is pretty similar to some of the other reviewers, but my reactions may be different. Dark brown with almost no head, and surprisingly thin mouthfeel for a porter, without the oily silky smoothness I expected. Taste is more like a sour ale than a porter, with a hint of malt and a hint of sweet chocolate but no intensity or complexity. Wouldn’t buy it, and probably would not drink it again, but not unpleasant. There are just so many better porters available.
