Commercial Description:

Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Dark brown color with a very thin head. Woody aroma with some sweet malt. Watery malt taste with a little bit of coffee. There really isn’t much here; kind of a disappointment.

Bottle: Strong malty chocolate aroma with light coffee. Pours a dark brown with a white head. Nice dark chocolate flavor and aftertaste. Light coffee lingers more in the background. Light sourness.

Pours black with no head. Slight nutty aroma with some prune or raisin hints. Initial flavor is coffee, then a sweet middle maybe molasses or caramel, with a dry coffee finish. Leaves you thirsty for more. Very clean crisp porter.

A pretty ordinart porter. However quite watery and boring. Slightly burnt aroma. Otherwise nothing special about this beer.

This poured a deep, dark brown color with the slightest of off-white heads. The aroma is of roasted malts and burnt chocolate. It’s medium bodied with little carbonation, but has a deep roasted flavor with chocolate, coffee, and nuts blended in. Fairly dry finish. Not a bad drink.

This porter pours with a very dark brown body with no head or lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and malty with some coffee notes, a touch of cream and an odd bitterness. The flavor is sweet, creamy and full of roasted coffee. Medium bodied, smooth and creamy.
