badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Nov 17, 2004 black pour with no head; little carbonation, yet nice and smooth palate; typical porter aroma with a not so dominant flavor (nutty, smoky, with vanilla hints); very similar to the arcadia london porter, yet not as impressive BostonBeerLover (2), Ohio, USA does not count Nov 4, 2004 Fantastic Beer!!! Dark, almost black in color. Aroma is rich. The taste is as rich as the aroma yet you never feel full after drinking it. The best part of the beer is that it is a distinctive porter not a watered down stout. walleye (876), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Nov 2, 2004 poured a deep mahagany with a very small tan head that didn’t last. aromaplums, honey, molasses, brown sugar, dark chocolate, with hints of licorice. flavor, weak, watery, bitter chocolate, molasses, dryness, a little diappointed with the flavor I was hopping for more robust flavors. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Oct 30, 2004 Bottled: Deeep brown with fading off-white head and some lace. The aroma has notes of milk chocolate, vanilla, hazelnut, smoke, boyenberry, aromatic pipe tocbacco, and some star anise. The taste starts with sweet note with a heavy cream and coffee undertone. Fruity midsection leads to a smoke and papery and acidic ending. Starts great out of the gate but limps to the finish line. The feel is way too watery. Could have...should have beer, still it is quaffable enough. jgb9348 (2492), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA Oct 28, 2004 Hazy dark brown coloured body with a thinnish light tan head that dissolves quickly. Aroma of nuts, raisins, roasted malt, a slight amount of cherries and some caramel. Medium to Light-bodied; Roasty flavour with some mild fruit qualities and that subtle lactic taste. Aftertaste clean-fairly watery for the sytle, not much going on. Overall, a decent porter-not as fabulous as I’ve ever had, but not horrible either. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased by Jon[R888710] from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Chevy Chase (Washington), D.C on 15-July-2004. DrunkAsASkunk (847), Lynnwood, Washington, USA Oct 13, 2004 This beer poured a very very dark brown slightly black color, which I was not able to see through with a quickly disappearing thick tanned head. The aroma is chocolately and malty with hints of vinous grapey qualities. There’s also a hint of wood and port wine...perhaps a hint of licorice as well and dark currants. Very nicely done, but as with most porters, the aroma is well hidden in the glass. Flavor-wise we’re looking and some heavy toffee, coffee and chocolate flavors with some active carbonation and once again, some port-wine qualities. Thick and gritty like peanut butter aftertaste..sweet and one-sided in its sweetness. Nicely done, but as I said, very sweet and one-sided..normal expected dry finish, very little lacing. A fun beer, probably worth another purchase. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Oct 7, 2004 (12 oz bottle, $2) This is a pretty decent English porter, but unfortunately, I rated this in the same session with the porters by Samuel Smith and Fullers, and the Original Flag Porter falls considerably short in comparison with those heavyweights; This porter emphasizes a toasty chocolate flavor which is lightly sweet and candy-like, and moderately bitter; Medium bodied and a bit thin on mouthfeel; Lightly roasted chocolate aromas dominate the nose; Dark brown in color, but still translucent; Light tan head starts off fairly small and fades away to nothing, with no lacing on the glass Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Oct 5, 2004 Drinking from a nice, warmed-up bottle...
Color is deep, dark brown, showing some reddish transparency around the sides and bottom, with a short, off-white head.
Aroma: delirious perfection! Rich, roasted coffee at first, then anise, big-time, spice, molasses, dark rum, more, ...I drank it in the nose long and deep, savoring every sniff!
Flavor from nose continue in the taste, but one thing really sticks out significantly: a lack of depth and a shallow mouthfeel. Barely pierces the palate, this one, and the finish is far too short and forgettable. I want a good porter to wrestle a little with my tongue, and more importantly, to really get comfortable and rest happily on the palate, spreading flavor all around the mouth, creating an overwhelmingly unctuous experience. Does. Not. Happen.
This enjoyably dark, twisted melange of flavor exists for a moment, then is gone long before you’d like it to.
Drinkability? Boy, you can toss them back, but the experience is too disappointing to want to revisit. Alas.
