Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Drinking from a nice, warmed-up bottle... Color is deep, dark brown, showing some reddish transparency around the sides and bottom, with a short, off-white head. Aroma: delirious perfection! Rich, roasted coffee at first, then anise, big-time, spice, molasses, dark rum, more, ...I drank it in the nose long and deep, savoring every sniff! Flavor from nose continue in the taste, but one thing really sticks out significantly: a lack of depth and a shallow mouthfeel. Barely pierces the palate, this one, and the finish is far too short and forgettable. I want a good porter to wrestle a little with my tongue, and more importantly, to really get comfortable and rest happily on the palate, spreading flavor all around the mouth, creating an overwhelmingly unctuous experience. Does. Not. Happen. This enjoyably dark, twisted melange of flavor exists for a moment, then is gone long before you’d like it to. Drinkability? Boy, you can toss them back, but the experience is too disappointing to want to revisit. Alas.

Dark chestnut-brown body and soapy tan head. Aroma of butterscotch, soy sauce, chocolate, and caramel. Same flavor with some light roastiness. High diacetyl levels dominate. Long buttery, toffee aftertaste. Slightly sticky and cloying. A fair porter.

An extreamly cool story behind this beer. 1825 yeast strain used to bottle condition the beer. However it wasn’t as good as I expected. Poured a dark copper with a thick tan head that died quickly and left a poor lace. The nose was full of dark chocolate, lightly roasted grains and coffee. Hints of alcohol in the nose as well. Really fruity in flavor. Unbalanced with some chocolate tones and some roasted grains as well. It tasted like extract homebrew. i didn’t like this one.

Deep rich colour typical of a Porter. Tan head that hugged that sides of the glass. Rich coffee flavor with malty overtones. Smoky but rich. Not a bad porter in my opinion.

Nice brown color, small but decent lived tan head that faded slowly to leave a slight lace behind.very nice roasty malty aroma with maybe a slight fruit accent but that might be pushing it.There is also a slight caramel side coming through as well.Nice roasty malt flavor with a slight burnt caramel taste and some mild hops coming through as well.Over all it’s quite smooth with just a bit of hops coming on at the end with the main flavor being caramel.Very nice brew and well worth trying again even after #1500

original flag has a bit of a dry smokey flavor, and is a little light for a porter.its also a little pricey in my opinion but still a very good beer overall.

Nice deep brown with a quickly disappearing beige head. Faint sweetness, coffee, oatmeal raisin cookie, and toasty caramel on the nose. That’s nice. A little bitter up front but turns quickly to a light, burnt coffee, toffee and caramel. Nice balance, great aftertaste, but watery. But worth every penny.

Bottle. Good loooking porter. IMO this is exactly what a porter claims to be. It has a touch of swetness, but balances that out with some toffee and malt. The roasted malts are there but are not too over bearing. I like the fact that they reigned in the sweetness. Slight malt and grape on the finish.
