Commercial Description:

Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

An opaque red-brown beer with a small brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of chocolate and the flavor is sweet with notes of caramel, roasted malt, and hops.

Clear brown-red. Nose a bit malty. Flavor has lots of toffee character to it, also bready and figgy.

Deep brown color, chocolate aroma. Poor head retentionSolid creamy mouthfeel without being thick. Bitterness only accentuates the sweet malt character. A fairly good beer, but for some reason it does not seem to fully come together in the end.

Rerate Bottle. Still too sweet, no balance, completely flat. Sticky and watery. Glad I revisited this one.

Dark walnut color, reddish highlights. Very small head, quickly diminishing. Smells like cocoa and Godiva liqeur. Taste sweetened coffee with lots of cream. Finish more bitter with a slight tang but also more watery on the palate. From the aroma I expected a bit more. This does alright as a straight up porter but doesn’t hold a candle to Selins Grove.

A very dark beer with a lot of taste. Not too much of an aftertaste with a lot of finish.

Dark roasted coffee bean brown color. Small khaki head of medium bubbles. Smell is chocolate chips, raisins, nuts, and oatmeal/dough. Begins sweet caramel, butterscotch and chocolate, then a little sour cherry and lactate with some raisins. After is sweet and subdued. Very mellow porter, tasty. Bottle purchased at Chevy Chase wine and spirits.
