Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a deep brown with a very fizzy head. The head disappears in mere seconds and leaves no lacing. The nose was solid with roasted malt, coffee, grain, a hint of chocolate, and a bit of a metallic odor. The carbonation must have all left because the carbonation in the mouthfeel was low. Roasted malt, caramel, and chocolate notes dominate the palate. Finish is good with some lingering roastiness and chocolate. Very good drinkability and overall a very solid example of the style.

Nothing better than drinking a part of history. Smooth taste...Dark pour, nice coffee chocolate finish. Everyone should try a piece of history.

Smooth on the palate. Dark pour with a medium mocha head. Aromas of chocolate, coffee and cream waft toward the nose. The palate and taste do not disappoint with a creamy texture and predominate taste of chocolate present.

Pours dark brown with about one inch of tan head. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, nuts, caramel and roasted malts. Tastes like a classic porter and is very well balanced. Nice roasted flavor with toffee, and coffee flavors. Some chocolate adds to the bittersweet combination. This seems a little thin for a porter but I really don’t mind at all. This is a nice porter. A very enjoyable brew.

Choc coffee aroma and flavors. When it warmed up a little it became creamy. Great story behind the beer and one to enjoy.

Butter’s 4th cellar reduction. Slightly transparent dark brown with a nice brown head. Nutty and toffee aroma with similar flavors, thick mouthfeel and a good smooth finish.

Dark brown in color. Pours medium thick. Coffee bean aromas. Softer on the palate than I would have expected. A little short on the finish.

Bottle at the Fourth Butters’ Cellar Clearance Event. Dark brown pour with thin tan head. Great chocolate aroma, very rich. Flavor is roasty, smokey, chocolate. Medium body, not watery like many other porter’s i’ve had. Very nice.
