Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Pours a deep ruby brown. Smell of sweet caramel and light hops. Very dextrinous body. I think they might use brown base malt in this as I don't taste much of any roastiness.

Deep ruddy brown in color. Carbonation that clings to the glass like cola. Small head. Aroma of malt and molases. Smooth taste of sugary malts. Dry, light hops finish.

Great looking dark porter with solid tan head. Aroma of chocolate, raisens and dried fruits, fantastic. A bit light on the taste compared to the aroma. Solid beer though.

Pours out very dark and lovely. Nearly opaque black with faint red highlights when held up to the light. Aroma is medicinal/alcoholic, roasty and fruity. Taste is very complex with dry roasted malt as the primary profile with hints of coffee, smoke, raisin, chocolate, black pepper, and licorice. Lactic acid like sourness also adds to the complexity. A bit thicker than most other ordinary porters I’ve tried. The complexity makes the drinkability suffer a bit. Makes a fine sipping beer to wind down the night.

color is dark brown, no head...just a few bubbles. lots of smoke and peat in the aroma. hell this could be a rauchbier! very meaty aroma. flavor is mildly peaty, with a fair amount of hoppy bitterness. the finish is earthy with a slightly chocolatey aftertaste.

Pours a nice coffee-like color and consistancy with a nice off-white head that could have left a better lace. Smells of malt, which is typical for a porter, but there's a sweetness kick to it that goes beyond the usual. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, and sweet malt. It could use just a bit of hops, though. Mouthfeel has a *really* nice mineral sensation going on. Drinkability is good, it's one of the better porters out there.

2003 bottle. Pours a wonderfully clouded deep brown with some muddy greys, a tinge of orange-violet in there too. Small tan head that sticks around. Aroma of strong yeast, dark fruits, and some sweet molasses/brown sugar. Begins with a pleasingly challenging yeast flavor that is mildy sour, mixed in with some dark caramelized brown sugar and prune flavors. Wininess that is reminescent of Taddy Porter (but not as strong). Mouthfeel is perfect; creamy, smooth with a touch of zing through the bottle conditioned carbonation. Medium-full body, didnt find as much roast throughout the body, but more of an alcoholic/dark fruit baltic porter flavor. As it warms and finishes there is a more classic light coffee and chocolate malt flavor that lingers. This was a superb porter.

Thin head with almost no carbonation. Great aroma of maple, coffee and roasted malts. The maple really sets this apart. Color is a dark brown black. Flavor is a little thin but good. More malts and coffee with a creamy feel in the mouth. Finish is dry and roasty with a coffee aftertaste. A decent porter that starts of great but does not finish that strong.
