Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Overall I thought this beer was quite good. However, the aroma seemed much too sweet for a porter and gave away the chocolaty taste a little too soon. but when compared to other porters, flag porter really stood its ground.

Pours a dark brown with a slight brown head. Wonderful aroma of carmel and chocolate. Roasty malty flavor, not as nice as the aroma. A little thin, but decent.

Nice looking beer. Dark brown with a creamy tan head that left nice lacings on the glass. The aroma was light. Some roast malts, some yeast. First taste was very watery and very bitter. I didn't think I was going to finish, but the bitterness faded quickly and left a nice dry palate. Beer improved as it warmed leaving a good roasted flavor behind. Still remained somewhat astringent.

Black body with small, rapidly fading tan head. Roast coffee flavors. Dry, astringent finish.

Tastes like a porter, but I've had many better than this. It seems to be almost flat, maybe it's a bad bottle. Don't get me wrong, it's not that bad - it's just not one of the best either. Nice typical dark color, no head at all, nice chocolatey aroma.

Dark brown opaque body with a very thin head. Roasy butter toffee and cocoa aroma. Smooth bitter sweet coffee flavors. Plenty of hops in the finish. Decent porter, but doesnt really hit the mark with me.
