Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Nice roasted aroma. Very impressed from the aroma. Deep dark pour with a slim tan head. Definitely some fruit undertones. Smooth. Some chocolate in the flavor as well. Very complex but quite satisfying!!

Excellent porter. Love the story behind the yeast. You can see through this rather light porter with red tints. I agree with Silphium that this has nice fruit undertones. There is a slightly sour note to the mouthfeel. Thin body, but still has enough compexity to keep me interested.

Pours deep red-brown, with little carbonation (minimal light tan head). Dark fruit, toast, and chocolate aroma. Rich, complex flavor was impressive: chocolate, tobacco and dark fruit with a nice roasty finish. Bitterness is minimal, allowing malt complexity to shine. Relatively thin body and also pretty flat. A solid, tasty porter.

Aroma is full of fresh crystal malts and milk chocolate and french roast coffee. Appearance is dark ruby with not much head and no lacing. Flavor is roasted and pretty watered down. The mouthfeel is watery and slightly dry and metallic. Overall this is a well balanced, decent porter, but leaves a little to be desired in the tail.

(Bottle) Pours a dark brown color with a medium head. Good flavored porter with a smooth finish and hints of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt.

Smokey black licorice aroma with some woody, hoppy tones. Wow... it smells like beer, and looks like beer, but I’d sweat it was water... hardly any taste, and no body whatsoever. Thin as hell, with very soft and subtle flavors of chocolate.

Very black with a moderate white small bubble head. Has a very dominate burnt skunk/english bitter aroma to it. Tastes like watered down chocolate with a small amount of garbage feel to it. Sounds bad, yet comes out pretty nice when all is combined. I can enjoy it, very refreshing for a porter. I like.

Dark brown to black with medium head and some noticeable lacing. Flavor was bitter chocolate and coffee with some roasted malt. Nice example of the style.
