Commercial Description:

Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

I didn't find this porter to be all that complex. Brownish/black appearance with a nice head. Flavor was slight bitter chocolate and a tad bit of smoke. It was a little thin and 1 dimensional for a porter. An enjoyable drink but not very complex.

Bottle: almost stout-like appearance. Creamy, creamy mouthfeel. Big chocolate flavor. I like the rater that said it tasted like a Tootsie roll! Very cool story behind this brew and a very good brew to back it up!

Nearly black brown/red porter. No head. Cherry nut chocolate nose. Tootsie role. Earthy woody flavor. A little bit of sweetness but salty as well. Good porter.

Pours a deep brown getting close to black and has red edges with a tannish head. Roast and chocolate malts in the nose. Sharp roast flavors with some more of that chocolate. Woody taste in the finish. Nice porter.

Small brown head, short lived. Black brew with ruby red highlights when held up to the light. Phenolic, chocolatey nose. Medium body. Chocolate and some roasty flavors with some slight acidity also. Finish is dry, fruity.

Pours a DEEP brownish red. Small tan foam on top. Nose is slightly bitter. Almost a salt hint to it. Some roasted malt as well. Wonderful taste! This is how I like it. Creamy chocolate and coffee mixed with molasses and salt. Pleasantly bittersweet finish. This was very good.

On some swallows, there is a coppery bitterness, on others, it tingles like touching a battery with your tongue. The aroma and flavor almost make me think they poured in port wine. Every swallow is different. Very very rich and complex flavors.

This stuff is like pure sludge, a definitely unique porter. Very sweet and dark, with lots of carob, molasses and espresso. Tastes like it has been aged in whiskey barrels. Just has a very full mouthfeel and a very strong alchohol presence. This porter lets you know that you are drinking it.
