Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

This stuff is like pure sludge, a definitely unique porter. Very sweet and dark, with lots of carob, molasses and espresso. Tastes like it has been aged in whiskey barrels. Just has a very full mouthfeel and a very strong alchohol presence. This porter lets you know that you are drinking it.

Bottled. Coffee, molasses and chocolate came through from the nose, to the taste, to the finish. I didn't get any of the smokiness that others mentioned. I wish I had; it would have made this good porter even better.

Beer pours (in Chimay glass) a dark brown, near black that can be seen through when held up to light with a small amount of off-white head that dissipates quickly to near nothing. Aroma is of caramelized rubbing alcohol with whisky notes. Flavor is of extremely watered down whiskey with a rubbing alcohol tone. Not undrinkable, and not too unpleasant - just not any good taste or smell to speak of. If I want a shot of whiskey or rubbing alcohol, I'll have one - but not by drinking this beer. Sampled at 71 degrees Fahrenheit.

Aroma of molasses and some hops and alcohol. Pours dark brown, thin head. Flavour is bland. Lacks any molasses/coffee tastes. Sourness at the end. Thin and disappointing porter.

Molasses and chocolate nose. Very dark copper. Dry chocolate finish with a thin late smokiness. Thin body.

Definitely one of the great British porters. Stylistically similar to Fullers London Porter, the Flag has a wonderfully vinous aroma with hints of currant, licorice, blackberries and cocoa. It is a muddy brown colour with a thin beige head. The palate is medium to thin. The beer has a subtle roast complexity throughout any overwhelmingly astringent bitter flavours. Definitely some hints of chocolate as well. Very nice porter.

Very mild English porter. Medium, dark brown. Slightly creamy. Only mild hints of roastedness. Very plain.

Not as dark as some other porters that I have tried before. Nice smokey aroma, with a semi-chocolate and banana taste? Very smooth, to almost watery flatness, not the best porter I have ever had but still very good.
