Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

12 oz bottle at Butters’ 4th Cellar Reduction. Pours a lacing beige head with a dark brown body. Smells of molasses, toast, and coffee. Tastes the same but a bit thin.

Black pour with an off white head. Aroma of sweet malts and caramel. Flavor is very sweet, caramel, and some roasted malts. Light body. Good but not too spectacular.

A very smooth and satisfying porter. Very classic tasting with a good balance of malt and hops.

Dark brown with tan one finger head and some lacings. Aroma is molasses. Taste is brown sugar and bitter hops. Some cocoa malt. Mouthfeel is full with good carbonation. Some leather and molasses in the finish. Sessionable and quite good. Nice smooth bitter finish.

Pours a deep blackish-brown with a brief brown head with a lovely sweet inviting aroma. Dry roasty porter, stout-like, with a lingering chocolaty finish. Low in carb, nice and creamy body. This is really quite quaffable - I nearly finished the glass before even thinking of rating it. Good stuff!

12oz bottle from Rollin Oats (Tampa, FL). Pours a murky dark brown to black color with a one finger tan head that settles quickly but still provides some lacing on the glass. Aroma is roasted and malty with notes of chocolate, ripe dark fruit, some hints of caramel, honey, wood and smoke. Flavor is sweet and chocolaty with notes of roasted coffee, honey, carame, ripe dark fruit and some hints of vanilla, smoke and wood. Generally medium to full body with a pleasing malty, chocolaty finish.

Pours nearly black with red highlights. There is a slight tan head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, and tobacco. Full mouthfeel with ample carbonation. The flavor is quite interesting in a good way. Chocolate, malt, smoke, and a touch of hoppy bitterness. A good beer with a great backstory.
