Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

A slightly cloudy deep red.Medium off white head. Somewhat roasty nose with hints of chocolate and hops. Medium bodied, dry roasitness, bittersweet/light chocolate and coffee flavors throughout, creamy and lively mouthfeel. Enjoyable porter.

Head is initially average sized, creamy and rocky, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy dark brown with small visible particles. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted, dark chocolate, mild coffee, dark bread), lightly hoppy (pine), with notes of smoke, banana, and plum. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately bitter. Finish is moderately bitter, lightly sweet. Medium body, dry and creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly astringent. Very nice, no major flaws...only the faint piney aroma and slight astringency keeps this from a higher score from me.

This is a very nice beer but I was a little dissappointed considering the levity of the sunken vessel story on the bottle. I expected more. It’s still a great beer though. It’s very smooth!

Freaking awesome. Smokey flavor with a nutty (buttery) aftertaste. Try one today!

Imagine Riesen, those hard German chocolates, and you’ll have a pretty good idea. Not balanced or strong enough to rank with the best porters, though.

light brown colour, a dusty, sooty malt aroma and palate, which is quite dry throughout. This beer, along with a couple of other traditional examples, uses the original ’brown malt’, which defined the original porter style, but disappeared until very recently.

Dark ruby color, excellent malty taste and aroma. This is what I call beer.

Has potential, but doesn’t balance out the bite nearly well enough, a problem I have with many beers of this style.

The story susposedly is this is brewed from yeast that was found in bottles from a sunken ship in the English Channel. A nice flavorlful Porter. Not the best Porter I’ve had. Not all that thick, but had some hops flavor in it as well.
