Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Pours a deep brown color with almost no head or carbonation. Aroma is heavily roasted malt with a bit of toffee and caramel aroma too. Flavor is more f the same. This is a surprisingly sweet beer and a little sticky on the palate. Not bad, but just a touch to sweet.

Poured 11.2oz bottle into pint glass. Nearly black in color with little to no head. Aroma of chocolate milk with a bit of coffee. Tastes very interesting. Chocolate and milk with coffee. A tad watery for a porter. Thin mouthfeel, no carbonationFinishes very quickly. It’s drinkable, but there are better porters to be had. Worth a try.

Pours opaque black with a nonexistent head. Aroma is roasty, mainly coffee, some chocolate and maltiness. Flavor follows the aroma, being somewhat bitter, then with some underlying malt sweetness showing through. Very decent, but not up to the level of the best porters.

bottle. Looks and smells like a combo of an English Stout and an English bitter. Chocolate/malt nose and flavor. Looked like oil with a think brown head and little carbonation. Has the taste of a porter but tastes a lot like an English bitter and I would assume it’s because of English hops of some sort. Taste is kind of thin for what I like in a porter but I dig a good bitter and this is close to both.A bit on the watery side. Good brew though.

Poured a dark brown color with an off white head. Aroma was pretty bland mainly of weak roasted malts and maybe some muild chocolate. Flavor was much the same, pretty watery, not much to speak of here, but no off flavors.

Well, I had to buy this beer when the owner of the bar told me the story. Anyway, it pours a deep mahogany brown with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly leaving no lacing. There wasn’t a lot to the smell honestly. I got some faint coffee aromas and some sweet malts with some nutty aromas as well. The taste was better, with a well defined roasted character. Chocolate malts and coffee were also present long with a bit of nuts and dark fruit as well. The mouthfeel was a tad thin, but had good carbonation. this porter was OK and it was very drinkable despite not being the most complex porter out there.

No aroma, even on the pour, odd. Keep trying but there is no nose on this beer. Tasted... watery, but toasty and chocolatey. Maybe they kept too much seawater in the yeast they found, because this is way too thin to be considered a quality porter. Pretty average due to the thin, watery mouthfeel.
