Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Really solid porter, really simple beer. No thinkin here, just good, easy drinkin, smooth maltiness. Smells of literally nothing but maybe a little bit of mayo on rye. Silky texture and flavor. Slighty smokey flavor with heavy malt. Nice.

Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate, molasses, slight coffee, and roasted malts. Flavor is pretty light with everything I expected from the aroma. This would be a pretty good session beer.

Ruby colored with a nice coffee and malty aroma. Flavor is thin bodied and tamer than I expected from the aroma.

I’ve been wanting to try this beer for a while and finally stumbled across it at a grocery store in MA of all places. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Smells of chocolate, coffee, roasty, some peppery splashes. Tastes slightly bitter with some sweet milk chocolate and full bodied. The malt profile is a bit disappointing on this one. I was hoping for some lactic hints and some burnt molasses, neither of which are present in this beer.

Nice black pour with a thin tan head. Roasty malt in the nose and a very tame (traditional) taste of roasted malt and hints of chocolate bitterness in the finish.

12 oz bottle. Pours an opaque ruby hued dark brown color with a small head that dissipated quickly. Nose is dominant of cocoa powder and light roasted malt. Initial taste is very sweet almost too much before the cocoa powder begins domination just like the aroma. Mid palate display touches of roasted malt. Finishing sweet, cocoa and minor balancing hops. Body is light and thin. Head retention and Palate duration is average. A drinkable porter but nothing special.
