Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Bottle at Birreria Paradiso in Georgetown. Pours dark ruby, off white head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, caramel, grass, pine, earth. Flavor is similar with anise; not too overpowering.

maybe i’m sucked in by the story, but this stuff tastes like exactly the sorta stuff i could imagine old timers drinking back in the 1850s. strong, savoury malt whiff, with a bit of wood - not unlike some czech tmaves. sadly i didn’t get any of the sheets of lace (sounds kinky!) that Gusler got - maybe cause I washed the glass not long before - just something that looks like semi-flat coke. slightly salty malt flavours initially, followed by coffee that you’ve dipped your toast into a few too many times. very dry as previously noted. watery mouthfeel. reminds me of James Squire Porter, strangely enough.

Well, I had to buy this beer when the owner of the bar told me the story. Anyway, it pours a deep mahogany brown with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly leaving no lacing. There wasn’t a lot to the smell honestly. I got some faint coffee aromas and some sweet malts with some nutty aromas as well. The taste was better, with a well defined roasted character. Chocolate malts and coffee were also present long with a bit of nuts and dark fruit as well. The mouthfeel was a tad thin, but had good carbonation. this porter was OK and it was very drinkable despite not being the most complex porter out there.

Pours dark red-brown with a modest tan head. The aroma is a big malty molassas and pumpernickel and the flavor follows as expected, with the addition of somewhat sweet vinous notes and light-roasted italian espresso (think Illycafe) on the finish. Mouthfeel is thin, but soft and encouraging.

Overall, a very pleasant porter.

Bottle. Poured a deep black color with a tan head. Coffee and roast aroma with a hoppy background. The flavor was mainly caramel and coffee but had a nutty & chocolate undertone. Medium body with a coffee aftertaste.

Very dark, ruby red appearance with virtually no head whatsoever (even with a hard pour). Aroma is very roasty, sweet and very malty. Smells slightly of molasses. Flavor is malty up front, before quickly fading into a slightly watery bitterness. The hops are not that noticeable, but there is a detectable aftertaste. Its okay, but it needs more carbonation and a little more bitterness. Everything else is perfect.

Dark color with smoke and malt aromas and a chocolate malt taste. Very good beer.

Ruddy brown complexion. Dense light tan head. Earthy aromas, light coffee. Light molasses sweetness first. Kinda light-footed on the palate. Buttery burnt toast, espresso, light sourness, and a lngering bitter finish. Decent porter, perhaps a little lacking.
