Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

7/18/04. Poured out of 12 oz. bottle, obtained in a trade with someone on RateBeer a long-ass time ago. Pours a deep, dark, slightly hazy brown with many particles floating around in it and a dark burnt orange outline. Diminishing head is tan that turns sort of flat grey-tan. Not much going on in the lacing, and it doesn’t look all that special overall. Aroma gives some promise, mostly an almost doppelbock-like earthy malt quality. Some dark roasted notes and a touch of wood and hops. Reminds me almost of Anchor Porter mixed with Anchor Liberty and Anchor Our Special Ale. Yeah. Actually, I mean "No thanks." Flavor brings back some of that bite, a little strange for a porter, and complements it with an acrid sort of burnt edge. Pretty mildly acrid, but it’s still there. Also a light caramel hint and some roasted nuttiness. I even tasted a little bread crust in there, but I have a hard time picking it out now (and no, I wasn’t eating bread when I tried this). The finish is pretty nice after it starts a bit sharp, rounding out a lot to a pretty malt glow. Solid, but unspectacular.

Pours a very dark with a little tan head. Aroma that is very malty with a hint of chocolate. Flavors include some chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts. Pretty good porter.

Amazing story to this beer. The story alone should be worth trying this beer. The beer itself was quite watery. However, knowing the english roots of the porter, it may have been too cold when drank. It also had a salinity to it that was odd. Unusual porter for sure by todays standards.

Poured a deep black with a tan small frothy head. An aroma of bananas, alcohol and malts. The taste is of coffee, nuts and malts. A smooth medium body.

Out of a bottle at Collins Pub. Pours a deep reddish brown with a small beige head and some lacing. Smells slightly funky, with aromas of nuts, toasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Palate is soft and almost creamy. Tastes almost creamy, too, as well as chocolatey, nutty, and with an ending of some bitter coffee.
