Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Pours a nice dark color, with a dark brown head. The aroma is light, but smells of nuts, and chocolate. The flavor, is quite nutty, some caramel, and chocolate touches linger over the palate. It finishes with a slightly hoppy touch. I'd like to have a little more fullness of flavor, or something to differentiate it from other porters.

Out of a bottle at Collins Pub. Pours a deep reddish brown with a small beige head and some lacing. Smells slightly funky, with aromas of nuts, toasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Palate is soft and almost creamy. Tastes almost creamy, too, as well as chocolatey, nutty, and with an ending of some bitter coffee.

This beer pours a dark color with ruby hints around the edges. I has a small head and a little bit of lacing on the glass. The aroma is of burned malts and chocolate - very pleasant. The flavor is very full bodied. The flavor is very strongly filled with the taste of coffee mixed with licorice. Personally I'm not a big fan of porters nor coffee, but I must admit that this was a well made and very good porter. Great representation.

Ok not as sweet as most of theese but nice and smooth. Chocolate is present though.I doubt this yeast is nearly 200 years old. Good brew though

Dark ruby color, small head. Aroma of roasted Nestle Quik. Some caramel and coffee in taste as well. Mild and pleasant but not overly complex. Thin to medium bodied.

Pours nearly black with red highlights. There is a slight tan head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, and tobacco. Full mouthfeel with ample carbonation. The flavor is quite interesting in a good way. Chocolate, malt, smoke, and a touch of hoppy bitterness. A good beer with a great backstory.

Black, huge brown head. Chocolate dominated both flavor and aroma. Fruity esters, the yeast seems to produce the same results as today’s british yeast.
