Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Bottle. Nice backstory on this one there. Aroms is first dark fruit, then molasses, then barleywincahol. Little tan head, thick brown brew. Damn tasty. Roast barley toast. Malt milkshakes. Manages to be refreshing with its roasts though I do feel a little warming/calorie intake... This is another definition of sessie. A little bit thin bodied, if I have any complaints about it, but you can view that as a proter you could drink into late spring and see it as a good thing...hey! There’s some black licorice in the finish.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 22 Sep 2007) Dark amber, leather colour with brief, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with roasted grain and slightly smoky notes. Malty, slightly grainy taste with dark fruit, wild berries and balanced notes of dusty hops. Rather pale for a porter, quite different but enjoyable.

Pours a dark deep brown, clear with a thin cream to light tan head, thin. The nose is rather even and balanced. Light sweetness, dark chocolate, light licorice, very light floral hops. Some roast, very subtle. Lightly creamy. Thinner mouth, not quite watery, low carbonation. The flavors are in line with the nose. This is downright well balanced and enjoyable! Sweet enough to offset the acidity, largely coming from the roast, I think, though the roast isn’t too powerful until the finish, and even then it’s rather subdued for a stout (but stronger than a porter should be). Stronger caramel than chocolate. A bit of strawberry to apple, but not at all in the way of a Belgian. A little licorice. Acidic lightly roasty finish. Very balanced, not a bad beer at all.

Dark brown with a nice, frothy tan head that lasted the entire glass. Tastes of coffee, roasted malts, nutty, and bittersweet. A bit thin, but solid flavor overall.

Pours deep, deep brown almost black color. Head is almost non-existent and lightly clings to the glass. Aroma is sweet with caramel overtones and a bit of a chocolatey malt charcter, but there is an overly strong alcohol aroma. Palate is very thin with little carbonation leaving it feeling rather flat. This does make it very drinkable, however as it goes down quite smoothly. Flavor is slightly roasty with a hint of caramel malts. Luckily, the alcohol present in the aroma does not come through in the taste. While I prefer a more roasted flavor in a porter, this is one highly drinkable beer as the palate is rather thin and the flavor pretty mellow.

12 oz bottle pours a brownish black with a thin fading head. Aromas were like the flavors roasted and chocolately. The flavors were pretty strong but it lacked the body to back it up. A nice hop bitterness came through to round it out as a good porter.

Pours dark brown with about one inch of tan head. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, nuts, caramel and roasted malts. Tastes like a classic porter and is very well balanced. Nice roasted flavor with toffee, and coffee flavors. Some chocolate adds to the bittersweet combination. This seems a little thin for a porter but I really don’t mind at all. This is a nice porter. A very enjoyable brew.
