Buffalo trace sazerac rye whiskey. Lots of that full bodied rye whiskey flavor and some dark chocolate really bring this into the realm of a powerful beer

Sampled at 2nd annual 12 South Winter Warmer. I’m a big fan of Flat 12. These guys can make some seriously good beers. Highly recommend seeing the brewery in Indy. Anyway, this was one of my favorite beers at the Winter Warmer. It wasn’t as bold or as crazy as many of the other barrel aged stouts. There were quite a few I might add. However, this one was refreshing. It did a great job of emphasizing the the spicy rye whiskey characteristics without being overly hot and dry or sweet and syrupy which happens a lot when rye is being used. Another beer that some might criticize for not being heavy enough. On the other hand, I thought they nailed it. Without balance, it’s hard to have good complexity. They have both in spades with this effort. Cheers!

Sampled from the tap at FOBAB 2012. Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has sweet dark grains with a bit of roasted malts and just a hint of bourbon. Flavor has sweet dark grains and bitter chocolate with a bourbon note that grows in to a warming finish.
