TheAlum (5575) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - MAY 17, 2014
Draft on tap at the brewery (Indianapolis, IN). Pours a rich deep blackish hue, dark as midnight with opaque body, faint glisten of ruby on the bottom. Cakey brownish head stays firm and sticks around well, nice lacing. Aromas are cocoa, roast, and toast. Black malts, a bit of ash, more bakers chocolate, roasted barley and touch of sweetness snaking through. Initial is medium bodied, a bit creamy up front with silky black malts, some caramel, gentle creaminess and oat, roasty elements start to hit into the middle. Cocoa, coffee, and some toffee elements. Nice play between distinct toasty roast and sweeter cocoa and toffee elements. Backend is dry, a bit more bitter but not overdone. Roast, dry earthy hops and a bit of ash mix with a silky body. Peanut shells, earth, some soil with firmer coffee depth. Finish is a bit bitter and dry, still some decent body overall. Solid offering here with some rich flavors, good play and balance between the clashing elements. Nice.

Roasty with rye malt flavor and a really dry mouthfeel. Has a pretty neutral yeast flavor and some slight resinous hop finish.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a mostly opaque dark brownish black with foamy beige head that slowly dissipates into lacing. Smells good; dark malt, chocolate, coffee, and roast. Tastes like it smells, but not as balanced. Solid on the palate. Smells significantly better than it tastes; I almost gave it a 6 on taste, but it clung to a 7.

Suttree (5041) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - APR 2, 2012
At the 2012 East Nashville Beer Festival. Smells like coffee and Rye toast, which is a part of a healthy breakfast. Taste is pretty much what the aroma suggests - rye bread and coffee. I liked it.

Plastic hand bottle courtesy of StFun, thanks. Pours a dense black color with a medium tan head that has fair retention. The aroma is modest with dark fruits, coffee and chocolate mocha. The flavor is a big blast of blackened barley with coffee, roasted grains, bitter walnuts and earthy hops. The palate is full, creamy and luxurious with soft carbonation. Finishes long and dry with a lingering aftertaste of roasted walnuts. Overall: Fans of roasty stouts will love this one, count me as one of them. Thanks again Josh I owe you more for this.
