When Fall rolls around, so does Jack. Provided he stays away from marauding trick-or-treaters, this bright orange gourd-like squash from the genus curcubita (Thanks Wikipedia!) finds his way into the mash of this Flat12 seasonal pale ale. A special blend of Indian(a) spices and pumpkin shine through just enough to complement this slightly sweet and malty tribute to the season of hayrides and bonfires. Flat out fantastic.

This was a guest tap that sounded better than it actually was. While not a terrible seasonal it needs to be shored up in a couple of areas. Overall though it is one of the better Flat 12 releases that I have tried in the last year.

Aroma / Appearance - A coppery base with soft legs and wisps of white head swirls around the glass. Spicy pumpkin pie, whipped cream, nutmeg, and squash are cool like the evening of a first frost or a muddy pumpkin patch.

Flavor / Palate - Earthy and mud caked pumpkins stick to the tongue. Dried seasoned seeds fresh from the oven transition to a refreshing finish along with a dash of garlic powder. The mild bitterness is a good touch. It feels rough around some edges. Overall though it is in the ballpark; a fine seasonal worth trying at least once if local to the state.

Draft pour at the source. Aroma has an interesting anise and spicy profile. No bready crusty profile to balance things out. If I were a bigger fan of anise, I would like this beer better. Oh well. Its an alright beer regardless.

Draft on tap at the brewery (Indianapolis, IN). Pours a nice golden amber hue, subtle haze, decent carbonation with a brighter whitish head atop. Filmy layer dies to a decent ringer, mellow lacing and some gentle dulled golden amber glow. Aromas show pumpkin, canned and fresh, a gentle carmelized sugar feel meeting firm nutmeg and ginger. Some mellow cinnamon, gentle sweetness. Not necessarily richer pumpkin pie sweet, but it has some life. Firmer pumpkin and spice elements. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied showing some carmelized malt, firmer clove and pie spice elements. Bigger ginger and nutmeg, touches of bread, firm pumpkin. Not necessarily toasty, caramel, or sweet. Lacking that inviting creaminess. More approachable girth, but a big spice element dominates. Middle is spicy, clove and cinnamon come on strong. Cinnamon takes the reigns, a bit bready with some pumpkin, nutmeg and spice. Backend is dry, spicy, with some gentle pumkin, tapering out spice. I found this one a bit different. Not sweet and a bit clunky, but firmly spiced, cinnamon and pie spices really dig in up front and into the middle. Solid. Different.

12oz bottle, shared by caterwaul. Clear yellow orange color. Thin white head. Good splotches of lace. Some definite tea-like aromas in the nose, along with some of the expected pumpkin spice aromas. Pretty big and interesting nose. Lighter body. Smooth, crisp, lightly creamy carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Smooth, easy-drinking. Very nice, unique combination of spices, very tasty. Not so pumpkiny, but the spices here used are very tasty. Moderate sweet, light bitter taste. Very solid, tasty, interesting unique spice beer.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours a light golden/orange color with about a half inch off-white head. Head retention is good, and thereís a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like pumpkin (or should I say Indian(a)) spices, pumpkin, and some sweet malt. I think the taste is just like the aroma, itís all pumpkin, pumpkin spices and sweet malt. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, itís a bit slick, smooth and easy to drink. I liked this pumpkin ale, I wouldnít mind buying some more the next time I come across it. $10.99 a 6-pack.

Draft to pint. Looks solid; a completely transparent gold with foamy off-white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells odd; a strange mix of hops, pumpkin, and spices. Tastes like it smells with a pale malt backbone. Average on the palate. Not my thing.

Wasnít expecting much based on the rating. This was definitely a pleasant suprise. Extra from olr...Thanks, Omar! Gusher of a pour. Head becomes pillowy with tons of lacing. Clear orange golden. Pumpkin spice nose and some white wine tartness on the nose. Zippy with some pumpkin flesh and some earthy pumpkin spice, but predominantly a very tart green apple malic finish. This could be infected, but if it is itís in a good way. Sour heads I know would love this. Not acetic at all. Hmmm...Iím going to rate this based on the assumption itís suppossed to be this way, just cause Iím digging it. My kind of pumpkin beer...not sweet and not overspiced. Proceed with caution.

Had this on tap at the East Nashville Beer Festival. Since this is their fall beer, Iím not sure how fresh it is. The pumpkin pie aroma is certainly the highlight of the experience. I smell cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, all in a very creamy mix.The creamy nature continues into the flavor and mouthfeel. The pumpkin pie spice blends with a little alcohol hit in the finish. Not as sicky spicy as some but I didnít appreciate the noticeable alcohol for a beer that is only 5.7%.
