3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle
A diamond in the rough is a shock coming from Flat 12. It is not that they often release subpar beers so much as this is almost the best example of the style in southern Indiana. If you can only grab a single bottle from the brewery I’d go with this one (if fresh).
Aroma / Appearance - The inky black base simmers until the aggressive head surges to almost overwhelm the glass. Bittersweet chocolate, roasted malts, and peanut butter sit on a base of rye toast. Ashy marshmallows and smoky hops merge with ease.
Flavor / Palate - Black licorice, coffee, and roasted malts rise over time as they stick to the back of the throat. Smoky planks of oak hang around along with a dark fruity texture. The bitterness grows over time until it becomes a core part of the experience. This is a decent release worth about the $1.99 it cost for a single.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle- thanks StFun. Pitch black with a big, robust, creamy head. Aroma with subtle floral hints. Smooth, without the burnt smoky bitterness of many other black IPA’s. One of the better black IPA’s I’ve had.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz. bottle thanks to queenholly. Insane pitch black color with over carbonation. Tan head flowers so powerful I had to pour half. Wait and pour the other half. Aromas of roasted barley and pine hops. Flavor is very good balance of roasted malts, (coffee and chocolate) with strong pine hops that has a long bitter pine finish. With proper carbonation this would be very good.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle thanks to MadBeerBaron...thanks Ben! A pretty solid, drinkable Black IPA. Deep brown-black body, thin glass rimming beige head. Big roasty notes, sort of oily in a good way, with a solid hop backbone to even it all out. A real quality example of the style, not overbearing, and has lots of quality ingredient depth.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours nearly black (a bit of light gets through around the edges) with a huge light tan head (over-carbonation?). Nose is some hops, but mostly a nice roast aroma. Flavor is quite nice. Hops and roast, with the former making the initial impression and the latter making up the middle and end, with the hops reasserting themselves in the finish. It’s well balanced between the two...a beer with two stars, really. Hops become more assertive as the beer warms. A solid beer, quite nice, and worth tasting. Needs a bit more complexity to really make a mark, but a very worthy offering.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Definitely lighter than it looks. The flavor is light with just a touch of roastedness. Not too much hop bite. Really mild. Overall pretty good.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled at esbls. Dark brown with brown high lights. A small beige foam. Lots of roasted notes here. Nice citrus hops work well. Caramel is underneath. This is tasty.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thanks to StFun for including this in a trade! In short, this beer is roasted malt and coffee bitterness. Pours dark with a thin white head. The initial aroma is all roasty notes, but once it warmed I caught more of the malt in the nose. The roast character comes through in the taste, along with coffee (and especially the bitter coffee notes). The palate is thin; I would have liked more body. Overall, it’s a nice session type of black IPA.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from StFun! Pours black with a little off-white head. Nice roasted malts and hops on the nose, some chocolately notes in there as well. Taste matches the aroma, solid beer.

Draft to taster at Yogi’s in Bloomington. Looks good; a dark cola with foamy light beige head. Smells of dark malt and chocolate. Tastes like it smells witha bit of hops and roast. Nice and smooth on the palate. Enjoyable.
