Howler. Thanks to josh for remembering my request from a long ways back... Vessel opens with a hiss and yields a smooth deeper the cola hue with reddish auburn edges and a thin film of light beige head... Aroma of smooth rich fudgey and silky barrel notes. Barrel is apparent but meshes extremely well with the tones of chocolate... Flavors are more of the same with a heavily pronounced bitter charred midway through and more towards the backend. Hints of burnt marshmallow developing a nice rapport with the barrel. Just above medium bodied with adequate carbonation. Well-executed. Char is just a bit too aggressive overall.

Backlogged fest rating: Pours opaque with a small frothy head and not much lace, oily tears. The aroma has notes of bourbon vanilla and oak, chocolate, coffee, leather, tobacco, dark cherries and some clove. The taste is similar with heavy bourbon notes, rich bittersweet chocolate and vanilla overtones backed by earthy wood and cherry imbued pipe tobacco. Nice spicy notes upon the finish. The mouth feel is aggressive with alcohol but soft with carbonation, long oily and ashy aftertaste. Solid enough but methinks the mouth feel could have been better... a tad too long in the barrel.

Catching up on notes. Sought this out at GTMW, amazed to find only a small line. Oily black, small dark brown head. Huge woody vanilla notes, creamy dark chocolate, a hint of toasted coconut and caramel. Super unctuous mouthfeel, a little coffee, more vanilla bean and cocoa. Fabulous.

On tap at 2013 GTMW, stumbled on this one by accident, glad I did! Pours black with a thick brown head and sticky lacing, the aroma was full of chocolate, toffee and a little bit of the bourbon, nothing overpowering but a perfect amount, the flavor has a nice chocolate front end with some toffee and coffee in the finish mixed in with the bourbon and vanilla notes, awesome.

Draft pour on tap at GTMW 2013 (Madison, WI). Pours a deep blackish hue, dark and brooding, opaque with frothy milk chocolate head. Frothy with decent lacing. Aromas are cocoa, roast, and gentle spirit. Oak, tannic vanilla and toffee. Some gentle bakers chocolate grows, firm body. Initial is firm and big, cocoa and roasty. Gentle vanilla and oak. Not hot. Firm body, cocoa and lush roasty malts. Caramel and toffee. Middle is roasty, some spirit as we round the corner. Toffee and toast, gentle spiciness. Backend is bakers cocoa and roasty, some cocoa. A bit of anise at times. Finish is firm body, roasty and dry. Nice beer.

Draft. Black body. Creamy tan head. Big aroma of chocolate, roasted grain, bourbon, vanilla, tobacco, wood. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Full body, velvety texture, moderate carbonation. Bourbon and beer are nicely balanced. Lots of flavors. Bittersweet chocolate, oak, bourbon, alcohol. Itís a bit boozy in the finish, but you donít mind considering the complexity of aroma and flavor.

A beer worthy of coming out of rating retirement for. Truly an outstanding accomplishment by Flat 12, an incredible brewery doing amazing things. Pours a rich deep black with little to no head. Almost a hint of red when held to the light. Aroma is everything you expect from a Pappy RIS: wood, cream, vanilla, dark chocolate, with a touch of bourbon. These blend together perfectly on the palate, with a nice bourbon burn. Very balanced, very delicious
