4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 RapeBeer (17) - USA - NOV 30, 2011
You know that feeling that you get when you wake up in the morning only to have your body scream at you for over-indulging in beer the night before? Whether or not you end up puking, your tongue, stomach and eyes all conspire to try to trick you to never touch beer again. You lounge on the couch all day chugging water and watching The Simpsons, trying to make it up to your body for the punishment though which you put it. It sucks....
Waking up the next morning after over-indulging in Upside Down Blonde is a completely different story. Sure, you may have a little cotton mouth, but your body almost seems to sway in approval of the blissful near-drowning from the night before. Not only is UDB a treat to behold, but every step of the drinking process is an absolute delight. From first sip to last drips, I cannot think of a better beer to drink all the time, every day. Don’t miss out on this beer if you have an opportunity to drink it. Drink as much as possible.

Draft sample. Poured clear golden color with an average off-white frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate sour citrus hop and malt aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Good drinkable brew.

Draft at RapeBeer’s wedding. Pours a semi-cloudy golden color with a small, resilient, soft white head. Notes of bready malts, crackers, grass, sugar, apricot, and peach. Surprised by the fruitiness I was getting here. Light-bodied, with abundant soft carbonation and a bready mouthfeel. Pleasant and refreshing.

Upside Down Blonde is definitely the beer that gets lost in the line up. Of the 8 beers I tried at Flat 12, it was probably my least favorite. Not a bad beer by any stretch. The pour is clear yellow with adequate head. The palate is smooth but the flavors are a bit bland. OK

Tap. Light orange malt aroma. Cloudy pale yellow color with a small head. Sweet orange malt and moderately bitter citrus hops flavor. Very good.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Block (864) - West Lafayette, Indiana, USA - JUN 22, 2011
This beer was OK. With so many other offerings from Flat 12 this beer got lost in the mix. Nothing outstanding and pretty typical. Not a beer I would choose when visiting the brewery.

tap at the brewery - Pours bubbly golden with a white head and an aroma of mild hops and bready malt. The flavor is balanced sweet, light malts with crisp bittering hops. I’d like a bit more going on here, but the style is intended to be straightforward and refreshing. Alright.
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - APR 10, 2011
Sampled on tap at the brewery (Indianapolis, IN). Pours a nice pale golden hue, light haze, and a fairly big frothy whitish head atop that laces small. Pretty sessioner with some hop haze. Aromas are cereal grains, a touch of honey crisp, faint apple, bread dough, light grassiness. A lot there, but light. Initial is lighter bodied, but some substantial bready malts, touches of cereal grains, dough, pale malts, some honey, maybe a touch of buttery diacetyl which gums up the works a bit. Finish is clean, a bit buttery, faint to near nothing in the bitterness department. It’s fairly clean with a touch of buttery diacetyl which kinda keeps it from it’s goal. Not my favorite. The buttery feel clears itself up a bit, and gets back to that borderline crisp grainy vs. Buttery backend. Some moments are inspiring, some get a bit funny. Ok.
