COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Helicopter is a coffee oatmeal stout made with locally roasted Columbia coffee beans from Paradise roasters in Ramsey, MN. What makes this coffee beer different you ask? This is the first beer of its kind made with coffee brewed on a Clover machine, which uses a unique mechanism for extracting the subtle and complex flavors of a coffee bean. Don’t miss this chance to taste this one of a kind brew.

Tap. Dark brown to black pour. Roasty coffee and chocolate all over the nose and taste, very tasty stuff.

Nice coffee aromas and a nice dark pour. Coffee taste is a smack in the face but in a good way. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22 ounce bottle that pours black, aromas of chocolate, coffee, some vanilla, and a kiss of ash. Flavors are cold coffee, roasted malt, and chocolate, decent little stout over all that I would drink again.

A pretty tasty stout although its lacking in complexity. And a bit more flavor certainly couldn’t hurt.

Pours almost black with a quickly dissolving head. Strong coffee and chocolate aromas. Surprisingly thin and a bit too carbonated. Good overall but needs more complexity and body to be a great stout.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of bnielsen13. Thanks Brad! Black appearance with a dark brown head that dissipates pretty quickly. Big dark chocolate, roasty coffee, light vanilla, dessert-like aroma. Somewhat bitter, dark roasty coffee, dark milk chocolate, rich oatmeal malty flavor with some of the coffee bitterness on the finish. A little thin.

Poured from 22oz bottle to snifter: Pours jet black into the glass with a soft edge of black coffee. Small latte head fades within a minute to a thin ring. Nose features all the notes of a fresh light roast plus some basic caramel characteristics typical of a full-bodied stout. The taste, honestly, is too heavy for me on the coffee. Almost like drinking an unsweetened coldpress. The stout notes are there, but barely. I could probably drink this on ice before breakfast. Not nearly as complex as I’d hoped. Mouthfeel also fills the coldpress description. Overall, good for what it is, but I’d really have to be craving this specifically to buy again.

Aroma has an awesome explosion of coffee smells, like you are drinking a fresh brewed cup mixed with beer! Taste is good but has more acidity that I like with stouts. The mouthfeel of this beer left something to be desired. It left an amazing aromatic start dead in its tracks and makes this beer less enjoyable. If it had a thicker viscosity I would love it! But now I just like it.

Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint. Appearance: Jet black with large initial tan head. Unfortunately, the head noisily dissipates into nothing at all. Looks flat after a couple minutes. Aroma: Coffee, both sweet and burnt roasted malt & molasses, some light oat. Taste: Light roasted barley and oats, with a nice layer of coffee on top. Without the coffee, this would be a substandard lightly sweet oatmeal stout. The coffee elevates it, but not quite enough. Palate: Moderate carbonation, overly thin body, finish does not have the dryness expected or needed from a Coffee Stout. Overall: Easy to drink, but nothing too spectacular. I will take Flat Earth’s own Porter over this any day.

Guerde (992) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - FEB 18, 2011
(bottle) Pours black with an excessively large dark tan head that indicates this beer is overcarbonated to hell and back. It is Flat Earth afterall, so I should’ve expected this. Aroma is musty, lightly catty, and full of dull, stale, lifeless, coffee. A bit of beef jerky. Flavor is equally objectionable, with plenty of two-week old, oily, coffee beans. Harsh and astringent roast with must. Palate is slick and oily with a high amount of carbonation and a roasty, spent grounds aftertaste. This is absolutely terrible.

Initial aroma seemed milky, like it was going to be a sweet stout (lactose). The up-front flavor is reasonably good, with the coffee coming through early. The later palate and finish is a bit more hollow, with a rather dull roast and a palate that doesn’t support the beer very well. O.k. drinking but not especially satisfying and a beer I wouldn’t buy again. Bottle.
