Sampled via growler at the Flat Earth brewery in St Paul, Minnesota. Pours a dark cola brown brew with a fast dissolving creamy light beige head that dissipates to a fine film. Aroma of toasted dark malt, some bourbon, vanilla, and a touch of dark chocolate. Taste is one of the smoothest porters of the series, silky with flavors of toasted dark malt, chocolate, some vanilla and bourbon. Finish is smooth, very nice balanced aftertaste of toasted dark malt, vanilla and bourbon. Of of my favorites of the series.

Growler. Pours brown and clear (for the most part) with a little off white soapy head that fades to a small wispy film. Aroma is chocolate maple syrup and some wood. Taste is bitter with subtle whiskey notes and vanilla and maple syrup with roasted malt all around. Palate is medium and slick with a chalky dry finish. Fun and interesting take on the standard!

Winterfest ’11. Not as complex as I hoped for, but good anyway. Mild oak with a very light alcohol essence. Clearly a porter, mild, roasted grain and smooth.

Sample at Winterfest. From notes. Very nice. The barrel aging is not overdone at all, leading to a beer that in essence is a more complex version of the base beer. Almost has a nutty quality to it, which I enjoy.

From growler thanx to mattyb83 pours cola like color with tan head. Aroma is sour wood and whiskey apparent. Taste has notes of coffee followed by wood and whiskey very watery thin on the palate. Taste is too light and watery to be a porter, even the color doesn’t match up to a porter.

From a growler. Pour is dark brown with a small off white head that quickly fades. Aroma is sweet and somewhat cola like with roasted coffee and a hint of whiskey. Flavor is light roasted coffee, a hint of vanilla, and some wood. I had high expectations for this but was let down.

Pours deep brown/black with off white head, aroma is nice and roasted with a touch of oak. Taste up front is a bit of bitter coffee and chocolate leading into a nice interplay between the oak and the roasted finish. Nice sessionable porter that balances the oak well, and very smooth.

growler, courtesy of bitbucket and dalzale--thanks! pours a deep opaque black with dense, creamy, lasting dark tan head. big sweet milk chocolate nose. creamy thickish body with soft carb. oak chunks fall out, cbut theyre very balanced within the structure of the beer...deep chocolate and roast in the thick waves of the mid palate, then tiny hints of bourbon and vanilla. very little impact to the carb and the body from the oak. really delicious and drinkable.

Growler picked up today. Dark black pour, very little carbonation and an aroma of roasted malt and a tiny bit of very boozy whiskey. Flavor is also a little roasted malts, little smoke, velvety vanilla and finished very light and left a dry aftertaste like that of a weak whiskey/coke. Very unique and enjoyable, I’m glad the booze wasn’t overpowering like many other whiskey/bourbon aged beers. Will probably head back later this week to grab another growler of this.
