The Imperial IPA is a Double India Pale Ale that is fully loaded with Cascade hops for explosive grapefruit flavors and aroma, assertive bitterness balanced perfectly with a strong malt backbone, and a slow, smooth finish. Montana grown 2-row pale, white wheat, and caramel malts. Simcoe and Cascade hops.

Bottle: Light amber in color; perfectly translucent. Small beige head. Mild aroma is sweet with citrus and florals. Tastes really damn good! A stout maltiness with plenty of citrus sweetness and a little floral. A bit of pine... a bit of who gives a flying f**k! Absolutely an above average DIPA that I’d rather sit back and enjoy then look any further. Well done Flathead Lake!

22. Pours a cloudy dark amber with bright orange edges. Loose white head. Big orange, grapefruit, and pine nose. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Caramel and toast on the mid palate. Grapefruit and pine showing, big piney wash for the finish.

On tap at the brewpub in Missoula. Pours amber with a decent off-white head and a citrus aroma. There is a hearty caramel malt flavor with a seriously bitter hop finish. Tastes great.

Draft at the brewery taproom. Pours mildly hazy gold/amber, thick off-white head, gorgeous lacing. Nose is grapefruit, citrus, lemons. Flavours are rich malt, many-layered citrus. Really potent grapefruit notes in the finish. Solid.

Sampled at the brewery. Cloudy orange, frothy beige head. Aroma of tropical citrus, dank herb, pine, good balance of sweet and resinous. Taste has the same good balance but maybe leans towards a sweeter citrus type hop. Does finish with a long bitterness. Medium thick body, smooth carbonation.

Copper pour with off-white head. Big hoppy floral notes. Flavor is all hops, really not over the top, but is paired well with a nice malt backbone that works great! Nice big bitter finish, that leaves you wanting a little more to this high alcohol gem.

Brewpub tap. This batch is 9.8%. Clear orange amber, big passionfruit and citrus aroma, sweet. Perfect harmony between equally generous sweet malt and cascade hoppiness. Very bitter finish. A big beer that satisfies perfectly.

On draught at the Flanagan’s Central Station in Whitefish, Montana. Pours a semi-hazy orangish amber brew with a thick and slow dissipating off-white head. Excellent lacing during the dissolve and sampling. Aroma of sweet grapefruit, some citrus zest with a light caramel malt. Taste is thick, medium to full bodied, slightly tart with a grapefruit flavor. Finish is slightly tart, dry and a lingering grapefruit aftertaste. Good marks for this West Coast Double IPA style brew.

Draft half-pint at the brewery taproom. Pretty light in color but a nice firm foam head. Deeply resiny hop aroma. Mildly strong but without being over-done. Warming, although subtlely so. This is a very, very well done "big" beer that’s just not too big, as some can be. Nice welcome to Montana. (#2859, 5/12/2007)
