Next up on our rolling homebrewer competition tap is Berliner Weisse, brewed by Eric Lowe of the Austin Zealots. A Berliner Weisse is a traditional sour wheat beer of Northern Germany. This beer is brewed using German Pilsner malt, wheat and Hallertauer hops in the mash. The fermentation was carried out not by a typical brewer’s yeast, but by a blend of wild yeast and lactic acid producing bacteria giving it a noticeably tart and crisp flavor that mixes well with a warm summer day.

Draft… Hazy straw-colored ale with a small, fizzy, white head that disappears in the blink of an eye. The fruity, yeasty bouquet furnishes bready and acidic notes with subtle funk. Light-bodied with lively carbonation. Bready, tart, fruity flavor. Short, crisp, tangy finish. Very refreshing.

Tap at Flix. The look is clear, really no head, real slow pour, straw yellow to gold in color. Too cold of a glass. The smell is wheat, tartness from the lactic acid, slight funk, earthy, and ok. The taste is tart, wheat, lactic, lemon, fruit, and easy going in a good way.

Medium-hued magic yellow. White ring head. Do they put crack in these beers at Flix? Grapefruit and seltzer aroma. The palate is tart. And dry, then re-wets. Tart, dry fruity aroma. Flavor is tart, wet and fruity. You gotta love this style. Its so mysterious and good. There’s some clam juice character to the finish. Just love it. A brilliant interpretation to a niche style.

Straw color with a small sized head. Manure, wheat, and cereal aromas. Tastes of wheat, citrus, cereal, with a touch of funk.

Pours mostly unclear lemon in color with almost no head. The aroma brings predominant funk for sure and almost some nutty notes. The flavor is tart, crisp, lemony, and funky all blended well, quite nice.

The aroma is a funky citrus and bread notes. The appearance Is a hazy straw color with an extremely short lived off- white head and no lacing. The taste is much the same - bready lemon quality. Mouthfeel is light bodied and fizzy carbonation. Overall, the was an enjoyable tart beer with a touch of pleasing funk thrown in for good measure. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the brewpub. The beer pours a pale yellow color with a white head. The aroma is exactly as expected, full of wheat and some acidic, lemon notes. The flavor is more of the same. I get a decent amount of lactic sourness, as well as some lemon and wheat notes. The beer is very light and refreshing. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice sour beer, very glad I got to try it.

Hazy urine yellow with a wispy head. Sour and puckering as hell just as the style should be. Very refreshing.

Tulip glass at the joint- served a non transparent and heavily cloudy yellow/orange color- it appears almost like pineapple juice. Aroma of yeast, very faint candi sugar, and pears. Hits the mouth with a very light body, malt is near non-existant- but that’s ok in this instance, slight souring feel in the middle, finish is where the sourness becomes tart with a drying effect for good measure. Delightful.
