The winner of this season’s Flix Homebrew Pro-Am competition is Jason Kaffenberger of the Round Rock Homebrewers’ Guild with his Brass Hat IPA.
This amber colored ale is a traditional English IPA brewed with British malt, hops and yeast. It is more malty than your typical
American IPA with a unique earthy, floral quality from English
Goldings and Fuggle hops. British officers used to known as Brass Hats from the gold leaf decoration on the peaks of their caps and while enjoying this style of beer for themselves they would often water it down for the common soldiers to drink.
10% of the proceeds from the sale of this beer will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The beer pours a yellow amber color with a white head. The aroma is full of toffee and caramel - quite a malty smelling IPA. The flavor is more IPA-like. I get some earth and grass notes. I also get quite a bit of sugary sweetness and some nut-like character. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Definitely and English-style IPA. Not bad overall.
