COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
No one drinks Mild Ales anymore (not outside the Black Country anyway), but not so long ago London’s biggest breweries churned them out in phenominal quantities and Mild was very much of the London drinking scene. An X ale would be the most basic mild, so an XX is the next step up, hence the 4.0% ABV.

Gravity @ Wandsworth Common Halloween Beer Festival. The pour’s deep brown with a small head. The nose is white grape, some toasted brown bread and compost pile autumn leaves. The taste is mild tobacco, some light sweet nuts and red fruits. Hints of chewy caramel and spice. Medium body, smooth. Overall, rough around the edges. Not particularly tasty.

Amber brown, slightly caramelly aroma. Mostly caramelly palate though with a hint of burnt electrical phenols.

Cask at Ales and Tails, Twickenham, 04/05/13. Clear dark amber with a thin off white head. Nose is a big dose of malt, earthy, slightly musty, a touch metallic, toffee. Taste comprises dark malts, dark toffee, dark fruits, dates, pinch of tobacco. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, light bitter notes in the finish. Ok drinkable mild but perhaps carrying a little too much in the way of bitterness to be classed as a mild for me.

Cask at Tap East, London. Pour clear, amber-gold with a light, white foam head. Toasty grain nose, some mild toasted hay. Light to medium sweet flavor with whole grain brown bread, some toasted sugars, faint hay bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Faintly dry to finish, more grainy brown bread, light coffee. Nice little mild.
