Dark as the midnight sea, this medium bodied porter combines flavors from 8 malts, including 4 distinct chocolate malts (Victory, Chocolate, Rye and Midnight Wheat) with fresh nugget and cascade hops that work together to form a harmonious balance of aroma and flavor. Imparting a dry roasted malt character, with subtle hints of cocoa, licorice and toffee, this brew possess a balanced hop spice and malty finish.

BJCP 2015 Category 20A: American Porter

AROMA: Milk chocolate and roasted malt. Very sweet with some piney hops in the background. Lovely! 11/12

APPEARANCE: Deep dark brown to black proper. Large, dark tan, frothy head. Excellent lacing and retention. 3/3

FLAVOR: Intense roasted malt up front with resiny/piney hops in the middle. Finishes with milk chocolate candy sweetness. Very delectable for a non-imperial stout. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium/full body, though not viscous or sticky. Well carbonated and smooth throughout. No alcohol presence. Nice aftertaste of resin and chocolate. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This epitomizes the old "Robust Porter" style which was discontinued with 2015 regs. Can definitely hang with the big boys when fresh. 9/10

Bottle… Pours black with a quickly dissipating head. The aroma is toasty and chocolaty. Medium-bodied with a 2%-milk mouthfeel and lazy carbonation. The flavor is lightly roasty and nearly perfectly balanced. Lingering, comfortable, roasty aftertaste.

Pours a clear dark brown, almost black, body with a frothy brown head. The nose is chocolaty and sweet with cocoa and sugar. A light roasty note. The flavor is fairly solid, sweet chocolate and coffee with a little burnt roastiness. Minimal to no alcohol notes. Light to medium body with fizzy carbonation. Decent Porter, but not a standout.

Appearance: silky near-black pour, with a couple of millimeters of fizzy dark tan, almost purplish head; lacing is minimal to nonexistent. Aroma: sweet milk chocolate up front, with dark chocolate pudding coming out as it warms, with a tiny hint of coffee and general roast. Taste: VERY chocolatey and sweet, with subdued roast coffee, light vanilla, and a little tiny whisper of soy sauce. Finish: lingering chocolate sweetness, but a light roasty dryness smooths everything out. Notes: Wow, I was really pleasantly surprised by this. Palate was full and silky, but not encroaching into stout territory. Flavors were dominated by the sweet dark chocolate, which was a-ok with me. Nice porter! Bottle at House of Blues in Orlando, Florida.
