Firsthand accounts describe an intense beast with a potent aroma and bite. Proof that the elusive monster exists? Or proof that brewing with five distinct varieties of hops creates an unbelievable, relentlessly hopped India Pale Ale? One taste and you’ll know, Swamp Ape is for real. Editor: if you have a black IPA in your hands, rate it under "Black Swamp Ape," not here...

Rated based on notes taken 23 Dec 2011 -- A hop bomb with alcohol. Not more, not less. Meh.

Bottle. Pours golden Amber with a white head. Sweet malts, light fruity hops, earthy and toffee notes, with light bitterness. Tastes a bit out of date, but there’s no date on the bottle to confirm. Not that good.

12oz bottle pours a murky orange with lots of frothy, sudsy white head. Nose has dried orange peel, some kumquat, a little tea, a little bit of garbage. Smells incredibly artificial. Flavor is worse, overly bitter, plastic, kumquat, unripened orange. Sort of has that unripened chardonnay grape thing. Chunky, soapy, astringent finish.

Balanced floral/citrus nose, oranges and dandelions detected. Clear amber, headless. Honey comb and orange flavor, medium body. Orange peel in the end. Respectable DIPA.

12oz bottle, thanks to chudwick! Hazy golden orange color. Finger of off-white head. Leaves decent lace. Not much in the nose, kind of a musty metallic. In the flavor, sort of a piney hoppy aroma. Bigger bready malt. Bigger bitter, mildly astringent at first, light to moderate sweet, kind of a more dry taste in the finish, light alcohol warmth in the finish. Bigger body. Lighter carbonation. More dry finish. An OK DIPA, not too bad. Delivers the hop, along with a wallop of biscuity malt. Better than expected, better than rates indicate... Nothing outrightly wrong with it. Piney hop gets better as I go, some grapefruit citrus and bright tropical notes come out. Pretty assertive. Aftertaste is like lighter fluid, but it’s not awful as it sounds.

12oz bottle from my mom’s visit to the Orange state. Nose is citrus. Sip adds a decent malty backbone. Strong citrus. Despite the bad ratings, I like it. A little boozy.

12 oz. bottle from SoHo Organic Market, Elizabeth City, NC. Hazy dark orange pour with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of tangerine, pine, and mango. Taste offers tropical fruit, caramel, pineapple, and tangerine. The malt-to-hop ratio favors the malts a bit too much for my liking. Also, not sure if they chose hops that I do not care for but something else seems "off" with the flavor. Alcohol is a bit too present. Probably not as bad as I was expecting but still one of the last beers I would reach for in terms of a DIPA.

12 ounce bottle from Secret Santa, opened 7/31/14. Pours a hazy orange color with a thin creamy off-white head. Decent head retention. Looks a little viscous. Aroma of pale malt, clay, mild citrus hops. The taste is tropical fruits, citrus, pale malt. Medium bodied. I won’t say off balance just… oddly balanced. Strange beer.
