Firsthand accounts describe an intense beast with a potent aroma and bite. Proof that the elusive monster exists? Or proof that brewing with five distinct varieties of hops creates an unbelievable, relentlessly hopped India Pale Ale? One taste and you’ll know, Swamp Ape is for real.

Pours golden orange a bit hazy with a white head. Aroma is sweet citrus and a bit perfumey but not in a bad way. Flavor brings the hop perfume up TNT and all over, not smooth or pleasant like on the nose.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle on Sanibel Island, FL. Hazy, bright amber with a small off-white head and very good lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel, grapefruit, honey and bread. Muddled taste of honey, pine, citrus, alcohol and caramel. Medium body and medium/high carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Yellow pour with a white head. The aroma has some biscuit and pine notes. The flavor is full of bitter resin, pine, biscuit malt and some medium bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured a bit fuzzy (but mostly clear) orange with a small white head (that did not lasted that long but left lots of lacing). Aroma of hops, piney and citrus notes are predominant but you get some malts in there too. Taste is not that complex lots of hops, some malts a bit of smoke towards the end, quite sticky, it’s alright I guess...

FROM NOTES: August 12, ’12. Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a tulip. A: Malty and piney, not much depth here. A: Pours a brilliant medium gold with about an inch of head that dissipates at a fairly moderate pace and never seems to completely go away. T: Very sweet, some malt, and bitterness. Not a complicated beer, and far too sweet, IMO. P: Medium bodied, thick and sticky. Finish is sweet and sticky with the same sweet taste lingering. O: It could be worse, but there’s really just very little going on other than the sweetness.

Bottle->SA. Clear lite copper with 1 inch frothy white head. A: stale hops, herbs, grass, wet hay. Not good. T: bittersweet, with spicy malt and floral hops. Moderate carbonation, thin fizzy finish. Lingering bittersweet boozy aftertaste becomes unpleasant. AP.

This beer has been reviewed by many others so I'm not going to break it down in typical fashion - this has already been done ad-nauseum. I would just like to say thay I do not feel it has been represented here entirely fairly. While I would admit that it should rate only fair AS AN IMPERIAL IPA, I do find it to be a very drinkable beer and I would certainly encourage anyone to sample it for yourself. I say this as a tried and true Imperial IPA fan (my favorite style). Perhaps one should take it in the spirit of Florida as a hot weather brew which perhaps should sacrifice a little purity of 'type' for drinkability. As a final note, I've drank this from tap in Florida and remember it as being better than the bottled version. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tho is a smooth double ipa. Really strong and hoppy. Smells super hoppy and has a malty bitter finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
