(Bottled) Quite clear, dark ruby with a largeish, slightly tanned and lacy, quite tight head. Slightly sweet, roasty-caramely-malty aroma. Slightly ashy, acidic-malty, lightly roasty flavor with some saltiness and hints of licorice. No yeast here, either. Medium-bodied, foamy, slightly thin and acidic palate. Slightly better and tastier than the blonde, but nothing to write home about.

BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 17, 2012
The second beer in a ’Random reviewing evening’ on the bottles best before date of 22 Oct 2010. The brown 33cl bottle was poured into a ’Hoegaarden Grand Cru’ stemmed tulip. The whole sediment base flew out of the bottle and the ruby red body in the glass was awash with floating lumps of grist. The head on top was a huge mound of tan coloured bubbles and as the beer settled the look got brighter and clearer. Sadly the beer just had a cheap feel to it, the smell was a sweet almost sickly yeast mix. The taste was also very sweet and sickly, it had a nasty bilious aftertaste too. Not impressed at all.

Bottle from Mam & Dad’s holiday in Belgium. Very dark brown with red highlights. It has a candy sugar, red fruity and sarsaparilla flavour followed by a warming fruity finish.

Leighton (4101) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - FEB 12, 2012
Bottle at home with Lyoli, in London, on her birthday. Pours clear, red-brown with a small, off-white foam. Some ripe fruit in the nose, a bit of dark sugar and caramel. Medium sweet flavor, some nicely rounded fruit sugars, bread. Medium in body with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish, some more ripe fruit, toasted candi sugar. Not too bad, really.

Taste: start is malts, then comes a shit load of sweet brown bread, spelt, candy sugar, end is oily textured with sugar in aftertatse ... boring ...

Pours a hazy medium amber. Aroma is lightly malty, hoppy, yeasty. Flavor is moderately sweet, alcoholic, roasty dark. Not nearly as good as some of the other Abbey Dubbels I’ve had recently.

Bottle, bought @ AD Delhaize, Brussels.
Nice clear ruby red with a big, frothy, off-white head. Aroma is mild spicy, some black pepper, chocolate, mild raisins. Fair sweetness. Medium carbonation, fairly nice light creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is mild, chocolate dominating, still some black pepper. Fairly nice bitterness. A straight-forward dubbel, but still a fine one.

33cl bottle from Oostend, pours brown with a massive beige foam, brown sugar and a hint of banana and cloves on the nose, starts sweetish, then sultanas and a little bread-dough coming through, a faint touch of strawberry and a bit of treacle toffee. Aftertaste is dry, bitter and spicy.

Bottle looks simple, but good, beer in the glass dark brown, brownish head. Starts malty, fine fruity with notes of plums, light notes of cinnamon. Warming malty finish, not too dry. Quite drinkable. Well done!
