Frothy, cream-tinted-white head, huge and long-lasting over a hazed honey/amber body. Spicy, peppery, fruity nose (tangerine, grapefruit). Similar flavors, pepper dominant, fruit adds a pleasant sweetness. Nice heavy body with a sharp, dry finish. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Old notebook, rating dated 4/23/10.

Hazy amber with a minimal white head. Aroma of resin, grain citrus and pine. Goes from sweet to pine, citrus, bread with a lingering bitterness and finishes of with a tangy bitterness.

Metallic Gold wax bottle, $9 at Binny’s. At first pop, just a fresh beer smell. Nose over the bottle shows me there are plenty of grapefruitty hops inside. Pouring straight into the glass puts head over 1/3 of the glass, over a hazy IPA amber. In the glass, the hops show some pine resin and cut timber character. First taste is a big explosion of everything an American Big beer lover can want. Big citrussy and piny hops, backed by some stiff crystal malts that could be used to distill into brandy, and a nice warming alcohol. Happy, hoppy and malty. Soon as I finish writing, I’m going out to finish this on the patio.

Aroma:Sweet aroma with lots of grapefruit. Appearance:Light amber color, off white head, good retention, poor lacing. Taste:Lots of hop bitterness, grapefruit, and sweet malt in the foretaste. Hints of pineapple and tropical fruits in the midtaste. The bitterness lingers throughout the whole beer and into the aftertaste. Palate:Light to medium body, a little alcohol warmth. A tiny bit harsh. Overall:This is a very enjoyable IPA, with tons of hops. This beer walks the line between IPA and DIPA/IIPA. I love the complexity in this beer as I continue to drink it and it warms up a little.

Bottle thanks to Msante79. Pours reddish amber with white head. Very full nose of rye, hops, citrus and brown sugar. Taste of caramel malts, hops, some rye and citrus.

average amber color, foamy frothy head. body is too thin, bitter, but not a good bitter. not particularly good hop balance- not great hop flavor, just bitterness.not enough malt and body to carry all the bitterness. nice citrusy aroma, slight citrus flavor, flowery-rose petals, just too thin. as it warms it improves ever so slightly, but it is too little too late

on tap at dlday 2010... pours a golden orange brown with fluffy white to off-white head... citrus and resiny hop nose with some added grapefruit and quite assertive. nice....flavors start off semi-sweet with grapefruit and citrus notes with some added bitterness. body, mouthfeel, and carbonation was just right. solid.

Appearance: Pours out a near clear body with an orange-copper hue and capped with a fluffed, off-white head. Smell: Within the nose there’s lightly sweetish caramel, some grainy notes, and it’s goodly hoppy, with aromatic wafts of tropical, citrusy fruits and springtime flowers. Taste: Sweet, sugary caramel in the fore with pale and bready malts. After this malty initiation, it’s off to the crackling hops, with tastes of lemon (pith included), white grapefruit (pith included), and even some pineapple and distilled florals. Moderate, heightening bitterness. The lengthy finish is dry, bitter, and lightly resinous. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. There’s a remote oiliness to the mouthfeel. Drinkability: 1492 is an IPA, good and true, though I wasn’t quite as taken with it as I have other Flossmoor IPAs.

Nose is sweet on the nose - caramel, toffee, and spicy rye - I am pretty sure. Earthy toasted notes as well as a little floral/citrus and dirt. Pours amber/copper, nice head retention, creamy with nice lace as well. Flavor is sweet initially with caramel, a hint of crystal malt, toffee, toast, rye spice comes through mid palate and lingers with earthy floral hops and a light citrus essence as well. Full creamy body with a light lingering sweetness and a touch of hop resin as well. Too sweet for my liking in IPA’s to revisit but well made.
