4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 phaleslu (4528) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - APR 30, 2012
Draft at the pre-Dark Lord Day event, 2012. Pours a super dark brown, pretty much opaque, with a tan head that starts large and dissipates quickly. A lot of bourbon barrel notes in this, with vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, root beer, oak, chocolate, and coconut. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a sweet, roasty mouthfeel. Very tasty.

Draft on tap at the brewpub for Pre-DLD 2012(Flossmoor, IL). Pours a wickedly dark hue, well hazed with ruby brown edges and bottom. A tannish frothy head dies to a film, laces small. Aromas are sticky sweet toffee, toasty malts, and chocolate. A permeable sweetness, some more cocoa, vanilla and oak, barrel tannins. Touches of roasty qualities, toffee, and some biscuits. Barrel presence starts to assert itself more into middle, offering Bourbon spirit, vanilla, dustings of toasted coconut. Some more cocoa, toffee, chocolate covered toffee, biscuits. Firm barrel really brings the vanilla barrel tannins into the backend. Really nice, thinned out some of the sweetness and sticky nature of the base, but still firm on the palate, inviting barrel presence offers a good display. Toffee, coconut, drizzled cocoa and fudgey presence. Finish leaves lingering sticky malts, firm barrel complexities, and a good drinker overall. Really surprised.. This beer offers a lot. Creamy elements, lots of barrel flavor without much heat interfering. Solid.

Sample at GTMW ticket wait. Brown-black bourbon, caramel aroma. Smooth and chocolate edged, kind of booze forward, but grows on you. Not much semblance of a Schwarz. Big brown chocolate I guess. A lot of depth.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 NobleSquirrel (3336) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 21, 2012
Draft at Fobab 10. Pours a deep brown, near black with a tan head. The nose is soft chocolate along with some charcoal. Strong notes of woodford coconut and vanilla back it up. On tasting, fairly robust. Good barrel presence and integration. Quite clean overall. Medium bodied. Chocolatey finish and drying charcoal as well. Really solid beer.

22oz bottle pours a translucent, near black with one ring of white head. Nice nose, vanilla, milk chocolate, nutty, sweet, inviting. Flavor is sweet, brown sugar, vanilla, cake icing, chocolate. Full bodied, sweet finish. One note, but nice anyway.

Sampled at Nattifest ’12. Dark beer with garnet hues when held against the light. Short lived tan head. Nice mellow buttery bourbon barrel nose with lots of alcohol fumes. Big bourbon flavors in this beer with oak and butter and vanilla. There is not much behind the bourbon flavors. If you like bourbon then this is your beer. Tastey bourbon infused beer, but one dimensional.

Sample from a bottle shared by Bunker. Pretty sure it was the barrel aged version. Bottle looked exactly like the one pictured. Dark brown color. Good thin khaki head. Decent lace. Good robust malty nose. Some vanilla. Big body, good, creamy and smooth. Light carbonation. Some alcohol in the taste, moderate bitterness. Dry finish. This is a great imperial schwarz. Awesome mouthfeel and aroma.

22oz bottle. Rating #25. First off, this was a bitch of a wax job and it took awhile to get open, but it was worth the effort. This was a really good beer, light roast and dark fruits are prominent with a nice barrel character that wasn’t over powering. (2557)

This starts the gigantic backlog from DLD and the Jackie O release. Draft at pre-DLD party at the brewery. This tasted like a vanilla and coconut snowcone to me...definitely not in a bad way.
