3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Cornfield (5277) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - OCT 30, 2008
This poured thick and dark, so I’m guessing it was a black beer that they gave me at the mug club tapping. The head was tall and bubbly, a light brown in color, sustained and good lacing. The aroma was chocolatey, lightly roasted, with a soft pumpkin pie spiciness. Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel. The flavor had a milk chocolate surge up front, introduced the spices at the midpoint, and finished with chocolate and mildly roasted malts. The spices - clove, cinnamon, nutmeg - lined the mouth after the fact. I didn’t taste any squash. It probably mainly contributed to the creaminess. An interesting brew from Matt and Andrew.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BBB63 (5029) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - NOV 1, 2008
Tap: Nearly opaque with a small fading head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of chocolate, walnut, roasted grains, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, grassy hops and some pumpkin. WOW, nice balance of the porter flavors and the added spices. The roast shines through and the hit of nutmeg is just right, really works well together. Dry finish with a touch of allspice. The mouth feel is quite smooth and easy to drink. Well played Matt, a spiced Porter that does not go to extremes.

Tasted on tap at the Pizza Port Strong Ale Festival 12/6/2008. This beer pours a very dark black color from the tap. Small to medium sized tan foamy head. The aroma is chocolate and coffee, nutmeg and cinnamon. A medium bodied spiced ale. The malts are chocolate, roasted malts and coffee. The hops are earthy. The pumpkin flavors and there, but kind of hidden by the roasted malts and all those pumpkin pie spices. It’s a nice mix and makes for a very tasty, very smooth tasting beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Growler shared by weepster. Thanks. Poured an opaque black color. The head was light brown. Attractive aroma of pumpkin, chocolate, butter, and subdued spices. Nice. Medium bodied and slightly sweet with mild to moderate roasty bitterness. Great roasted malt and chocolate flavors pushed the pumpkin into the background a bit along with the subdued spices. Very well done pumpkin beer.

Growler from my main man in Indian, Indiana that is Mike BBB63. Pours black like and imperial stout, with a light brown head. Nose is spiced and smoky. Taste is rich and full of pumpkin and smoke and some burnt wood. This is a big muther of a beer, and I gotta say as much as I like it I can’t wait to see what my girlfriend will say. She likes it she is a smoked beer freak and this is complex and fun with lots of character. Nice brew overall, glad to have tried it.

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2009 on tap, pours dark brown with off white head. nose of chocolate, pumpkin, clove, nutmeg, and cardamom. flavors a much of the same, nice chocolately finish. the body is just too thin, if this had a fullier body it would be killer by the pints full.

A beer I was very excited to try after learning of Matt’s inspiration via judging at the 2007 GABF. Poured a very opaque black, looks very thick, with a moderate to smallish brown head that sticks around and laces in lumps. Aromas are very pleasant, powerful pumpkin pie spices (Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Vanilla) intertwined with a smooth chocolate back end. Taste is similar, a lot of the pumpkin pie effect up front with a touch more of the pumpkin shining through (but still largely spice dominated), smoothing out into a creamy sweet milky chocolate finish. No real bitterness detectable in this bad boy. Only qualm might be the sweetness of this guy. Might get cloying on a second or third glass.. but damnit, this brew was pretty fun. Cheers!

On tap at Flossmoor Station. Pours pitch black with a 1 inch tan head. Heavy spiced aroma of cinnamon and allspice with a bit of roastiness. Flavor is very much the same as aroma. Clove is a little more pronounced in the flavor, but mixes well with the other spices, coffee and chocolate. Absolutely phenomenal.
