Bomber. No doubting the rye in this bad boy. Caramel color pour with thin head on the rim. Nose of sweet malt, caramel, booze. Taste of caramel, booze, rye, toffee, and a hint of vanilla. Faint hops in the distance. Very enjoyable.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Glouglouburp (5572) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 6, 2013
In short: A complex and surprisingly smooth barley wine with great bourbon barrel integration. Too easy to drink. Excellent.
How: Bottle 22oz, silver wax-top, batch 1, consumed when approximately 1.5 year of age. Bottle sent to me by FullObs, thanks a lot Brett.
The look: Cloudy burgundy boy topped by a medium beige head that slowly dimishes to a ring of foam leaving a moderate amount of lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose has moderate barrel presence, mild bourbon notes, vanilla. Taste is crème caramel, sweet vanilla, cranberry juice, toffee, oily pecan halves, raisins, very nice bourbon barrel integration. Full voluptuous body with a precisely fine-tuned smooth carbonation. Sweet and juicy on the attack turning into a woody astringency in the finish Alcohol extremely well hidden. A beer that offers a good complexity and also a surprisingly high drinkability. Not only is everything well balanced in this beer but most impressive is how smooth it is, this is an 11% beer and I drank my bomber very quickly with too much ease. I probably had some great beers 15 years ago, some of them probably very rare, but with no social websites and beer websites to tell strangers about it, what a waste.

Batch 1. Dark brown, tiny tan head. Aroma of toffee and malt. Heavy toffee flavor, nice vanilla notes. Nice beer but not amazing.

Bottle shared with drowland, probably the 8th or 9th bottle we opened up that night, just between the 2 of us, awesome night, not gay or anything, but anyway. Pours a murky brown with a thin light brown head, the aroma has a ton of caramel and bourbon with a little bit of fudge as well, the flavor has an awesome caramel sweet front end with the BA notes coming through in the finish, the mouth feel of the beer was pretty much perfect, I would love to get another bottle of this.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 ineedbeer (185) - San Leandro, California, USA - APR 7, 2013
Batch 2.
Aroma is full of nice dark malt character along with some bourbon and oak character. The malt character has some nice spiciness, a good balanced caraway note, dark caramel and a bit of treacle.
Pours a nice light brown with some amber highlights. Light lacing with a tan head that lingers nicely and moderate legs.
Flavor is very malty with nice dark caramel notes and some nice rye spice. Light chocolate and treacle notes. Moderate bitterness with a nice sweet caramel finish. Moderately low alcohol spice in the finish.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Astringency is low with medium low alcohol warmth.
Overall this is one of my favorite barleywines. Lots of nice malt character and the caraway adds some good character.

Bottle shared on the RBWG 2013 Bus. Rich stuff. Plenty of caramel, alcohol presence, big brown sugar. Full bodied with fine carbonation and a touch syrupy. Warming finish, rich ripe fruits, brown sugar. Good stuff. Reasonably well balanced, even with the boozy edge.
