This reddish ale gives off a pungent grassy, citrus-like, aroma with a touch of pine that invites you to take a sip. The American hops (Chinook, Amarillo and Cascade) are balanced by the full-bodied sweetness of the malt and the higher than normal alcohol. The bitterness is not as aggressive as some of our IPAs but the bold citrus and pine type flavors linger on your palate and blend magically with the sweet malt flavor.

Purple waxed bottle from 2009. Another IPA I’ve held on to for too long. Those bomber just look so cool stacked up in cartons in my cellar. And the gold logo is way off center on the bottle, too! So. A lot of malty smell when opened, this has gotten a bit of phenol and oxidation, but just enough to give it kind of a barley soda smell. Hops have settled down to a sight citrusy note. Taste is pretty good, though. Malt taste has deepened and gotten just a tad sweeter. Hops are still there mostly as a bitter background. Like I said, a bit more soda character, but still great as going-on-four-year-old IPAs go.

Dank orange pour nice head and lace. Nose is full of grapefruit and floral hops. Some orange, caramel, and toast. Flavors of caramel malts, floral, perfumey, and citrus hops. Long lingering grapefruit hoppy finish.

Golden Amber with an ever lasting white head. Light nose of citrus and herbal hops. Palate is wonderful, grapefruit, tropical fruits, and a long lasting gentle bitterness with a great malt backbone. Perfectly in balance. A truly great IPA. Purple wax bottle purchased at the pub.

Bottle. Poured a hazy amber color. The head was two fingers high and tan. Attractive hop dominated aroma that included the likes of citrus, pine, and flower blossom. There was also some toffee, caramel, and light honey. Medium bodied and sweet up front with moderate bitterness. I tasted distinct ruby red grapefruit, toffee, pine, and earthy hops. Yum.

Bottle at Captain Lawrence during the release of Smoke from the Oak Apple Brandy Barrel. Pours a hazy brown with a thin white head. Caramel and toffee on the nose, not much hop presence though. The body is rather empty and has some weird flavors going on. Finishes up with a nice grapefruit bitterness, but not enough to really save the beer.

22oz bottle w/ purple wax. Poured cloudy copper in color with a large foamy head. Aroma of light lemon citrus, caramel, and oranges. Tastes of caramel malts, citrusy hops, lemon, oranges. A little on the sweet side, but overall not a bad IPA.

Bottle. Aroma is very rich and resinous hops. Dank and sweet. Dark purple hued reddish brown with a big creamy off-white head that leaves gobs of lacing down the glass. Very full bodied with a chocolatey malt body that has a nice roast finish that picks up when the hoppy bitterness subsides. Hops flavor is dank and spicy.

Purple "wax". Initial burst of foam, was only a sips worth, but the hops are heavy even from that small sample. Hazed dark amber to copper in color. Smallish beige head. Pithy grapefruit and orange peel scents Dominate. Some heavy caramel and darker floor malt in the background. Heavy, but not mouthcoating or cloying in feel. Lightly toasted malt start. Interesting mix in the middle with sweeter, juicy citrus along with light apricots and honey. More bitterness in the finish as some pine pitch seeps in. Nice balance and play between the sweet and the bitter. Linger has a pale caramel and malt sweetness that seems to ask for another swig.

Reddish pour with an off white head. Strong hop aroma with caramel and bread. Flavor is more subdued, flavorful hops with nice bready caramelly flavor. A touch of butter scotch. Bitter finish. Pretty good IPA.

22 oz purple wax top bomber courtesy of Todd. Pours a dark amber caramel iced tea color with a medium beige head. Aroma of grassy citrus hops, sour dough bread, and bitterness. Taste is grassy with hints of sourdough bread, citrus hops, and buttery malt. A bit tangy.
