3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 valpoaj (531) - Valparaiso, Indiana, USA - FEB 1, 2013
Cellared bottle pour - had fresh, but never took notes...nice whoosh upon opening, but no significant action to the beer - pours deep brown with reddish tints - some slight tan head that settles into a broken film. Aroma is quite light...sweet malt, candied fruit, brown sugar and some citrusy spice - pretty decent, though I’d like it to be a bit more forward. Flavor is interesting, and overall, I’d say solid - brown sugar, sweet, sugary malt, some dark fruits, and all accented by a strong orange note. Slight off-flavor that is kind of metallic, but it doesn’t detract too much from the drink. Palate is good, but might be a bit thinner than anticipated...slightly boozy on the finish. This is better than I remember it being in the past, so the cellaring definitely hasn’t hurt!

22 oz bottle. Got this in a trade at DLD 2010 (I think), figured I’d need to crack it open at some point. Pours a copper color with absolutely no head. Smells of wheat, hops, malt, clove (?), and some herbs or spices (pretty standard belgian smell to me). Tastes of malt with a weird mix of herbs to it; lost the clove and hops smells in the flavor. Light body to it. Might have served it a bit warm though. Not bad overall, but nothing special.

Bottled. A hazy dark golden beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, alcohol, and fruits, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.
